Designer Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss was born and raised in Manhattan, where she received her primary and secondary education at the exclusive Nightingale-Bamford School on the Upper East Side. After graduating from the University of California Los Angeles with degrees in History and Art History, Shoshanna began working at a lingerie factory to learn about design, fabric sourcing and construction in preparation for her career in the fashion industry.

In November 1998, Shoshanna changed the look of dress departments nationwide with the launch of her eponymous clothing line, Shoshanna. The dresses are whimsical with an attention to detail rarely seen in contemporary collections. In addition to her signature dresses, Shoshanna now designs clothing for every season—from string bikinis to towels and totes. As she recalls, “I found that there were not any wearable, beautiful clothes out there for someone with my body type. I could never find a halter dress or strapless top that offered support for women who usually need to wear a bra. That experience inspired me to create the pieces that make up the core of my collection.”

Shoshanna introduced Shoshanna Swimwear in February 2001. True to the signature Shoshanna style, the suits and prints are feminine, fun and sexy. An instant success, the line soon began out-performing more established competitors, due largely to its unique sizing: the two-piece suits are sold as separates, rather than as sets. Inspired by Shoshanna’s own frustration bikini-shopping for her shapelier figure, this revolutionary system accommodates all different body types and proportions. To ensure the best fit, tops are sized similarly to bras—based on both back size and cup size—and available in Petite/Small A-DD or Medium/Large A-DDD accordingly. The bottoms run Petite to Extra Large, and the separate pricing allows one to mix and match depending on each individual’s physique. In addition to string, halter, and bandeau bikinis, the swim collection includes tankinis, maillots and sarongs in a variety of solid colors and flirty prints. Important to the corporate culture, Shoshanna remains committed to designing and manufacturing the swim collection in the USA.

The arrival of her daughter in the spring of 2005 prompted Shoshanna to venture into children’s swimwear, which is now available at finer retailers under the Shoshanna BabyGirl label.
The Shoshanna dress, sportswear, and swimwear collections are carried in over 500 specialty and department stores nationwide, including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor, and select stores around Europe, Canada, and Asia.
