Rink Bar

Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets

There’s no better place to chill than Rockefeller Center’s Rink Bar. Choose the $7 cocktails—Cointreaupolitan, wild berry margarita or strawberry daiquiri, among our favorites—or the $4 beers, like our friends. Drink specials are served Monday–Thursday, 5:00–10:00 p.m., and Fridays until 11:00 p.m. We also love the bar menu, like Mediterranean dips or spicy chicken wings, $12 each.

Head to the Tuscan countryside via this Gramercy area mainstay. Pocket friendly drinks? How do $5 cocktails at all times and 50% off all bottles of wine Monday nights sound? Pair that with the three course prix-fixe lunch or dinner with seasonal produce from the nearby Greenmarket. We can’t resist the octopus trifecta, which includes a delectable pressed-octopus terrine. And the Tuscan fries, bathed in crisp herbs and tossed with whole cloves of garlic, are worth the trip. Ciao!

Ava Lounge at the Dream Hotel

Slip out of your New York state of mind at the AVA Lounge. For $8, indulge in the 100-calorie mojito made with Ty Ku, an Asian distilled spirit similar to vodka but free of sulfites and tannins for a “friendly” morning after. They’re also mixing up $8.00 Bellinis and $4.00 beers all day—and frozen drinks are free between noon and 1:00 p.m. For that backyard barbeque feel, order up $2.00 hot dogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers. Saturdays, noon–6:00 p.m. Through Labor Day.

Telepan

Calling all oenophiles. Telepan’s sommelier has hand-picked a selection of $200-plus wines, which will be 50% off through Labor Day. We especially love Pouilly Fumé ‘Silex’ Didier Dagueneau 2006 (Loire, France) and Pinot Noir ‘Griffin’s Lair’ Belle Glos Gambit Series 2006 (Sonoma Coast). This is your chance to sample some boutique wines that are often hard to find. They pair beautifully with the delicious seasonal fare gracing the menu. Telepan is open for lunch Wednesday through Friday, brunch Saturday and Sunday and dinner every night of the week.

Don’t want to leave the comfort of your own air-conditioning? Make our fabulous sangria, with wine recommendations from Anu Karwa of Swirl Events, and invite a few friends. Next year, in Spain!

• 3 cups wine
• 1 cup brandy
• ¼ cup Cointreau or other orange liqueur
• 1 lb. fresh fruit, cut into chunks (frozen works,
too—we especially like berries and peaches)
• 1 liter seltzer
• sugar, to taste

Mix wine, brandy and liqueur with fruit and let stand at least 3 hours. Add seltzer and sugar, and serve immediately.

Traditional Rioja, light bodied, with sweet red-fruit flavors ($26)
