Rachel Roy: What Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe PLUS Travel, Style and Beauty Must-haves
MM: What items must everyone woman have in their wardrobe?
RR: 1. A trench coat is a classic item and something that is a staple in my closet. It’s a timeless silhouette that you can either make super feminine with accessories or channel it’s masculine edge.
2. My new weekend staple this season is a car coat. Wear it the same way you would as a woven cardi as its lightweight and a perfect layering piece. It goes with everything – jeans, trousers and pairs really well with afitted cropped pant.
3. Add to your wardrobe basics by incorporating a thin long sleeve turtleneck. It gives you a clean polished look. A black, navy, or charcoal grey turtleneck can instantly transform your summer dresses into the perfect fall outfit.
4. Prints should be a wardrobe basic for everyone. I love eclectic prints and mixing them to create texture and interesting silhouettes.
5. Every girl should have a jewelry box with go-to pieces to finish off her look. For instant glamour, pile on your rhinestone necklaces haphazardly. I like to find jewelry that tells a story and makes a statement.
MM: What advice would you give to young designers out there trying to break into the challenging world of fashion?
RR: You have to follow what you think is right and do not compromise- that’s been my guiding principle. I know what I like and what works for my customer and if it’s not right, I don’t do it. Surround yourself with a great team of experts but it’s important for you to set the tone for your brand. Know who you are and what you are trying to accomplish- You!
MM: What charities or organizations are close to your heart?
RR: I’ve always focused on what I can do to improve myself and the world around me. My passion is not only dressing women to feel their best, but to help give a strong voice to women and children in need around the world. I’ve been involved with Orphan Aid Africa for a number of years and this season I’ve designed a “Kindness Is Always Fashionable” clutch where the proceeds will directly benefit the children in Ghana. A guiding principle that I truly believe in is through giving back you gain clarity, peacefulness and happiness in your own life.
MM: What upcoming projects do you have on the horizon?
RR: I’m working on some handbags with Fiona Kotur and am having so much fun! For a little Summer escape, I collaborated with Brazilian rock icon Seu Jorge for a collection that captures and celebrates the spirit of Brazil. I had a chance to travel to Brazil to work on the project and fell in love with the country and its people!
