Set Sail for Brunch

Enjoy the last of the good weather with an outdoor brunch aboard ship.

Like all good New Yorkers, we love brunch. We endure the requisite 45-minute wait for Sarabeth’s pumpkin muffins and Goldie Lox eggs, and we fantasize about the bread basket at Friend of a Farmer. But as summer fades (and who could fault you for saying, What summer?!), it’s the perfect time to enjoy our favorite meal al fresco before winter drives us indoors.

When we heard about the Shearwater Brunch Sail, we jumped at the chance. Sailboats tend to bring out the prepster in us—so we donned our favorite pearls, sweater set and docksiders, and trekked to Battery Park City, where we boarded the Shearwater, a gorgeous 1920s vintage yacht.

On our two-hour tour—which got us up close and personal with Lady Liberty herself, as well as the Brooklyn Bridge—we sipped mimosas and enjoyed fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, mini pastries and bagels and lox. The fare was yummy but also light enough to prevent the less sea-worthy among us from getting green around the gills. No need for crowd control here, either—the Shearwater holds 48 passengers, plus the captain and 3 in crew.

We were more than a little sad to disembark, but we couldn’t help feeling smug as we made our way past
the Sunday brunch lines back on land. Sails through November 1.

Price: Adults, $79; children, $39
