By Lindsay Hahn

makeup-minis

With warm spring weather right around the corner, fashion thoughts turn to skimpy tops, sexy sundresses, and sun-worthy swimsuits. So, it’s time to slim down. Out with the bulk and in with the minis! No, not a detox diet slim-down. Makeup minis! We love teeny-tiny beauty products that pack a super-size style punch! Need to be red-carpet ready or simply pack for a weekend getaway? You don’t always need a satchel handbag or a makeup case for travel. Here are 9 makeup products to travel light from day to night.

Makeup Minis for Nails: Nail Polish & Emery Boards
On the go? No time for a manicure? Mini nail polishes are perfect for travel or a quick chip fix. From a soft sweet pink to an edgy urban purple, the Sephora by OPI Urban Ballerina Mini Collection offers 4 must-have nail polish shades for $18. The hot color trend for spring? It’s all about Black Swan chic—think purples and grays. If you dream of a complete manicure experience on the go, smooth away your rough edges with Anne Taintor Born To Be Wild Emery Boards for $7.49. These matchbooks contain 12 colorful emery boards. Their witty phrases and vintage ’50s motif will add some flair and fun to your nail routine.

Makeup Minis for Lips: Lip Gloss
When stocking your makeup bag, don’t let lip gloss size panic limit your lip color options. No space is too limited for lip gloss. Pucker up in style! Trish McEvoy’s Emergency Card means never needing to pick favorites! For $32, you get 8 flattering glosses—a color for every makeup look—in a sleek, slim case. And 100% of the proceeds go to the Girl Scouts of America—gotta love a beauty product that gives back! And there’s no need for lips to go bare when you carry Cargo’s Daily Glosses, $12 for a 30-day supply. Each gloss is packaged individually, so just tear off a lip gloss tab and toss it in your purse.

Makeup Minis for Eyes: Masacara, Eye Shadow & Eyeliner
Don’t let size fool you! Dior’s Best in Show Mini Mascara Duo Set gives you 2 of the best mascaras in the beauty products biz. Use Dior’s original mascara to create those lush, catwalk-ready lashes. All eyes will be on you wearing the other mascara mini, DiorShow Black Out mascara. It adds a little oomph and a lot of drama to your lashes. Wear each masacara alone or layer them for that ultra-glam, show-stopping look. Two minis for $18. It doesn’t get better than that.

A bold eyeshadow always adds wow-power! The Bobbi Brown Mini Bobbi Brights Paletteicon packs 20 fun eyeshadow colors compatible with any complexion. Back away from the neutrals and try out these fresh pastels and rich pigments for $70. Step into the limelight and play up your eyes! This eyeshadow palette is a makeup mini must-have!

Are you looking for your Romeo, Don Juan, or Casanova? While you wait, you’ll fall head over heels for The Balm’s Pick-Up Liners. Each makeup-mini set has 3 mini eyeliner pencils. But this is not your schoolgirl pencil set! For $19, the tiny makeup case even includes a sharpener.

Makeup Minis Tool Set: Makeup Remover & Tweezers
The weather can be your makeup’s worst enemy, but don’t let the heat or rain ruin your picture-perfect eyes. If your mascara or eyeliner starts to run, grab bareMinerals On-The-Spot Makeup Remover. With a skin conditioning solution, these individual cotton swabs are perfect for quick fixes. For $5 a package, they are also the ideal eraser for those post-shower mascara raccoon eyes.

Let there be no more stray hairs . . . it’s time to tweeze—mini style! Tweezerman Hot for Dots Mini Slant Tweezers are the perfect portable size for grooming on the go. Whether you are at home, traveling, or just running errands, tweezers are always an essential tool. The original Tweezerman tweezers are a PageDaily beauty gadgets and tools award winner, and the mini version doesn’t disappoint. For $15, you get the same amazing precision with a playful, sassy dot pattern.

Makeup Mini Bonus: Purse Perfect

We just had to make a “mini” makeup exception when we saw a mini purse! Picture this: you are almost ready for a night out on the town but your bulky wallet won’t fit into your ultrafabulous clutch. Don’t stuff your credit cards into a pocket! Just rock the Callet—a silicone cell phone case with built-in pockets to hold your cash and cards. Made for the Blackberry or iPhone, the Callet is all about taking up minimal space. For $14.99, you carry a lot in a little!

By Daniela Apeloig & Lindsay Leff

pd-awards-drugstore-makeup

Have you ever walked into a drugstore to buy shampoo and only shampoo? Suddenly, you find your hands full of new lipstick shades, a mascara you just read about, colored eyeliner, even bronzer (summer is only a few months away!). Days later, you look over your new purchases and realize you will never wear that electric blue eyeliner or too-bold lipstick. We’ve been victims of the beauty aisle vortex, too. Instead of falling under the influence of makeup, makeup, and more makeup, just buy the best. The PageDaily Awards for the Best Drugstore Makeup—from the winning lipstick to the perfect skin-matching foundation—mean no more drugstore makeup mistakes. Bring a copy of these beauty awards and get ready to hit the drugstore!

And the PageDaily Awards for Best Drugstore Makeup Go To . . .

Clear away your lipsticks, glosses, and stains because we found the ultimate in lipcolor—1 lipstick that covers all of your lipcolor needs. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Le Rouge conditions lips with vitamin E and ceramide 5, while supplying long-lasting color for up to 10 hours. (The lipstick goes for a suggested retail price of $9.95. All prices shown here are suggested.) With 30 different shades, ranging from vibrant reds, ladylike pinks, and bold plums, there is a color for everyone.

Best Drugstore Foundation: Maybelline New York Fit Me! Foundation
The Maybelline New York Fit Me! Foundation, $7.99, replicates the exact shade of your skin, giving you natural and breathable coverage. Like a miracle camouflage, no one will be able to tell you’re wearing foundation. Fit Me! is available in 18 shades that match even subtle variations in skin tone. An added bonus—its sun-safety rating is SPF 18, which is a must-have in your everyday foundation.

Best Drugstore Mascara: Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara
Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara, $9.99, is a 2-in-1 mascara and lash-lengthening treatment. The formula promotes fast-growing lashes, promising a fuller, stronger, lusher lashline in just 30 days. Ingredients darken lashes while conditioning and protecting them from further fall-out and breakage. The mascara is available in 2 shades, Extreme Black and Black.

Best Drugstore Bronzer: Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Bronzer
A healthy-looking tan and natural glow is as easy as 1, 2, 3 with the help of the Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Pressed Powder, $14.95. The bronzer comes in 3 shades from light to dark so you can get your desired level of color. Formulated with vitamins, moisturizers, and antioxidants, this bronzer gives skin foolproof color for the perfect looking tan.

Best Drugstore Blush: Covergirl and Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush
Formulated with Olay Regenerist serum, this Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush, $10.99, is creamy and lightweight. It not only gives cheeks a pop of color but also strengthens your skin’s moisture barrier and protects against free radicals. This power-packed blush comes in 4 skin-flattering shades for a defining, even look.

Best Drugstore Eyeliner: Milani Liquif’Eye Liquid-Like Eyeliner & Eye Liner Pencil
We can’t get enough of Milani’s eyeliners! If you feel adventurous and want to test the waters with spring’s color makeup trend, try Liquif’Eye Liquid-Like Eyeliner, $6.99. In blue, purple, and green, the smooth formula glides on, leaving a shimmering finish. If you prefer classics like black and brown, Milani Eye Liner Pencil, $3.99, in true black and dark brown is the winner. These eyeliner pencils go on extra-smooth to give eyes that wow factor.

Best Drugstore Eyeshadow: Revlon Colorstay 12 Hour Eyeshadow Quad & Revlon Luxurious Color Satin, Perle, & Matte Eyeshadows
Revlon won over our hearts and our eyelids with its shadows. We chose not 1 but 2 different styles and formulas to match your makeup personality. The quad, $6.99, is perfect for the girl who likes to use them all or isn’t sure which shades to wear together. The 12 hour shades won’t crease, smudge, or fade and glide on easily for long-wearing color.

If you like to match your own shades, or always wind up with 1 color used up and the other 3 never touched, the singles are for you. In satin (a smooth, shimmering finish), perle (a sparkling, crystallized finish), or matte (a creamy, rich finish), these shadows, $4.99 each, are rich in pigment and blend well for even color.

Best Drugstore Concealer: Almay Smart Shade Concealer
Finding the perfect shade of concealer is like finding a needle in a haystack. Well, we found that needle with Almay Smart Shade Concealer, $8.99. Made with shade-sensing technology, this concealer transforms itself to match your skin tone, concealing dark circles and blemishes. The lightweight formula comes in 3 shades to match all skin colors.

Best Drugstore Makeup Remover: Andrea Eye Q’s Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Pads
After you spent the day looking and feeling great, don’t wake up the next morning looking not so great. No going to bed with a face full of makeup. Treat your skin well while keeping it healthy with the Andrea Eye Q’s Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover Pads, $5.29. The pads quickly and effectively remove all types of eye makeup and dirt while conditioning the most sensitive area on our faces. Each jar contains 65 pads.

Best Drugstore Nail Polish: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips

Pucker Up with the Perfect Red Lipstick: Illamasqua Lipstick in Box

By Lindsay Leff

_________________

I Want Red Lips
As a beauty editor (read I get paid to shop for makeup!), I have gathered my fair share of professional makeup tips.

How to Wear Red Lipstick with Your Skin Tone
I learned long ago the first rule for wearing red lipstick: match your skin tone to the undertone of the lipstick. How that translates:
• fair skin tones need a blue-based red lipstick
• olive-toned skin needs an orange-based red lipstick shade
• darker skin tones need deep burgundy-red lipsticks

Finding the Right Shade of Red Lipstick
So, finding the perfect shade of red lipstick should be as quick as blowing a kiss, right? More like finding a needle in a haystack . . . of lipsticks, of course. For a long time, I was at a red-lipstick standstill. I promise, I’ve tried them all and not one shade clicked, giving me that “ah, that’s it!” moment. Can you feel me pouting?

Illamasqua-Brand Beauty Products: Stage Makeup Meets Mainstream
Recently, I attended one of the most exciting work events I’ve ever experienced—the Illamasqua Makeup Master Class. Illamasqua, whose tagline is “Makeup for your alter ego,” is known for its almost-outrageous, richly pigmented colors—think stage makeup meets mainstream. This event was a showcase for the London-based beauty brand’s creative director and makeup artist, Alex Box. With her eccentric-genius approach to beauty, Alex’s idea of “everyday makeup” includes blue eyebrows and shadow, purple cheeks, and red lips. The look she created on the model was wild and spectacular, her face and neck stenciled with a piece of paper Alex cut on the fly.

Loved Illamasqua, but Will This Shade of Red Lipstick Be the One?
The morning after the event, I was feeling quite adventurous, so I looked into the bag of samples I had been given and smeared on red lipstick in Alex’s namesake shade—Box. A quick check for lipstick on my teeth and I was out the door and off to work.

The Perfect Red Lipstick Shade for Every Skin Type!
I wasn’t in the office long enough to get my coat off, when my editor-in-chief, perpetually on her own search for the perfect lipstick in red demanded to know what I was wearing and if she could try it. She did—and loved it! Everyone else at the office tried it too: blonds, brunettes, fair skin, olive skin. That’s when I realized that I had finally found the holy grail of beauty products—not just the perfect shade of red lipstick for me, but the perfect shade of red lipstick that looks great on everyone.
Buy Illamasqua Lipstick in Box, $22, at sephora.com

Makeup Tips & Tricks: The Right Way to Apply the Right Red Lipstick
When it comes to rich lip colors, particularly red lipstick, you shouldn’t just apply on the go. For the proper technique, we’ve got some beauty and style tips to keep that pucker perky.
Step 1 Apply lipstick with a lip brush, not straight from the stick
Step 2 Smear the lipstick carefully with your finger along lips to lock in color
Step 3 Dust translucent powder on and around lips to seal color so it won’t bleed
Step 4 Purse your lips around your index finger, then pull it out quickly to remove excess color and keep lipstick off those pearly whites

The Next Hot Thing in Natural & Organic Skincare Products: Tata Harper Skincare

The Next Hot Thing in Natural & Organic Skincare Products:
Tata Harper Skincare

By Stacey Mayesh

I recently went to a cocktail party and trunk show at the beautiful Tribeca home of a fabulously chic and beautiful Danish makeup artist. Tata Harper, a Colombian-born skincare entrepreneur, was there to show off her amazing organic skincare products and to give mini-facials.

Now, I have to start by saying that I am JADED! Having spent 15 years as a fashion editor at a magazine, with every beauty product known to mankind landing on my desk at some point or another, it is very difficult to get me excited. I am cynical when it comes to beauty-product claims that they will change your skin—most of it is just clever marketing.

I LOVE This Line of Organic Skincare
Well, let me just say that I was blown away by Tata’s beauty products. Frustrated that all she could find in the marketplace was synthetic, “cancer juice” products, or natural ones that didn’t produce results, Tata set out on a 5-year quest to create the most exquisite, 100% natural, results-driven organic product line available.

All of the products are made, packaged, and shipped directly from her organic farm in Vermont—many of the potent ingredients are grown there as well. Every beauty product is free of synthetics and is completely nontoxic.

I must admit that I’m a sucker for yummy-smelling products and clean, chic, simple eco-friendly packaging. I don’t like “perfumey” smells because I find them too artificial, and I’m very picky about the smells I like. Tata’s organic products smell so divine I just cannot get enough of them! After applying them to my face with my fingers, I find myself smelling my hands all day!

This Skincare Line Is Natural & Eco-friendly
I love that Tata also practices what she preaches. She uses glass when possible, instead of plastic. She uses treeless labels. She buys her farm’s electricity from sustainable sources. Too many beauty companies market their products as “natural,” but they are filled with parabens and chemical-laden ingredients I can’t pronounce. To add insult to injury, most packaging is made cheaply in China, using too much fuel to ship from the other side of the earth, and then ultimately ending up in a landfill because it’s not recyclable!

Organic Facial Products with Great Results
I’ve been using Tata Harper organic skincare products for a few weeks now, and I truly love them. My skin looks radiant, and I feel good about the business I am helping to support. I try to live my life in a socially conscious way, and I have to factor what I put on my face every day into the overall equation.

Lose Weight with Lip Gloss & Other Cool Makeup Magic

By Stacey Mayesh

Huge Lips Skinny Hips—a plumping lip gloss—was the first product launched by cult beauty brand Purple Lab. Now, with a half dozen double-duty beauty products in its arsenal and a deal to sell online through Urban Outfitters starting November 11, the brand is set to go from under-the-radar darling to mainstream fave.

Started by Karen Robinovitz, a former fashion journalist and all-around style guru, Purple Lab showcases multitasking products and sly humor. The Huge Lips Skinny Hips gloss includes a lip plumper and hoodia, an appetite suppressant. So as your lips get bigger, your hips get skinnier . . . sounds like win-win to me!

The lip gloss colors are fabulous and the names are as clever as Karen, who is hands-down the most creative woman I have EVER met! Think Kitty Pole Dancer (because Karen really wishes she was an exotic dancer), Worship Kate (because she WORSHIPS anything and everything Kate Moss), Red Sole (an ode to her god, Christian Louboutin), and No Panty Lines (a perfectly clear gloss).

Other Purple Lab makeup products include such genius combos as Cheek Implants, a cream blush with collagen for those supermodel cheeks; Luxury Squared, a concealer and highlighter in one; and the 2 latest—Silk Sheets, a lightening, brightening, firming, and moisturizing powerhouse that goes on bare skin, like silk sheets; and Pearlesque Show Silicone-Free Primer, a canvas for flawless foundation.

I’m OBSESSED with this stuff . . .
