Carmindy Shares Her Best Blush Tips

Super chic fashion make-up artist, Carmindy, from the hit show What Not to Wear and author of Crazy Busy Beautiful, Get Positively Beautiful, and The 5-Minute Face, shares her tips and tricks for making the most out of your blush this fall.

It’s time to put away the bronzers and self-tanners because fall is here. Though don’t think you have to be basking in the sun to get a gorgeous glow. Blush creates a fresh and youthful look, and while it’s universally flattering on everybody, you may find yourself spending hours trying to find the perfect shade for your complexion.

Choosing the correct shade of blush for your skin tone is key to achieving that perfect flushed look. Carmindy recommends pink for fair skin, coral for olive skin, and terra-cotta-ish for dark skin. We love NARS Super Orgasm Blush, (Sephora, $27.00), the perfect mixture of shimmering pinky/peach, not to mention flattering on all skin tones.

Achieving a natural-look with blush is all about the application. “Use a big fluffy powder brush to swirl on powder blush and use upwards sweeps starting at the apples and working back to hairline,” she says. Carmindy recommends using a big powder brush for powder blush (a regular size blush brush picks up too much color often resulting in inconsistencies in coverage). Carmindy also recommends using a synthetic dome brush like MAC 197 Duo Fibre Brush (MAC, $42.00) or even your fingers.

For applying cream blush, the tools are very simple-“For cream blush use your fingers and apply in circular motions the same way,” she says. We love the Blushwear Cream Stick (Clinique, $19.00), an easy-to-apply blush in flirty colors Rosy,Peachy, Glow and Shy.

When it comes to her favorite brands of blushes, Carmindy has no problem naming her top picks- “My Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Sheerest Cream Blush is the best there is,” she says. Another favorite: “I love the powder blushes by MAC for their color range,” she says.

With all the various types of blushes (powder, creme, and cheek stains) out on the market, it can be tricky to pin-point which is the best for your skin-type. “Powder blush is great for more intensity and for oily skin,” she says. “For drier skin and mature skin cream blush looks a but more natural and dewy.”  Athletic women should turn to stains to achieve the best look- “stains are best for really active sporty women who need a waterproof or sweat-proof color,” she says.

__________
“You don’t need money, just imagination”
———-

Why I love what I do
I try and live a beautiful lifestyle: makeup, healthy living, interior design, and travel. You don’t need money, just imagination and being able to celebrate what you have.

If I weren’t a makeup artist, I would
Travel the world as an adventurer.

I spend my free time
Traveling around the world, paddle-boarding in Miami where I own a weekend home, and deep-sea fishing. Anything on the water I love!

The makeup I always pack
Sunscreen, a great moisturizer, mascara, foundation, and lip gloss:
Buy SkinCeuticals Ultimate UV Defense Sport SPF 45, $37, at dermstore.com
Buy La Mer Crème de la Mer, $230 (2 oz.), at saksfifthavenue.com
Buy Blinc Kiss Me Mascara, $24, at sephora.com
Buy Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy Forever Stay Lip Gloss in Playful Pink, $9.95, at CVS

For a cold destination, I add
Rich eye cream and lip balm:
Buy La Mer The Eye Balm Intense, $145, at saksfifthavenue.com
Buy Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15, $22.50, at sephora.com

For a warm destination, I need
Intense waterproof sunscreen and a hat:
Buy SkinCeuticals Ultimate UV Defense Sport SPF 45, $37, at dermstore.com
Buy AllSaints Felipe Hat, $80, at allsaints.com

When I travel to a new place, I must
Find the locals and ask them take me to see their side of things. I always hit up the local women for their beauty secrets.

The best beauty secret I learned while traveling
Slather yourself in oil (like coconut oil) right after a shower or a swim. Learned that in Bora Bora.

When I travel, I buy
Beauty products special to the area that can’t be found anywhere else. I love finding beauty treats from all over the globe.

My favorite beauty find from a trip
A pineapple oil from Bora Bora.

My go-to travel outfit
A jersey dress with flat sandals and a big scarf:
Buy Diane von Furstenberg Naudia Dress, $365, at Diane von Furstenberg
Buy Tuccia di Capri Custom-Made Sandals, $110–$350, at tucciadicapri.com
Buy Calypso Fano Scarf by EPICE S.A.R.L., $275, at calypsostbarth.com

A good travel partner
Someone who can go with the flow when unexpected things happen.

A good trip
Getting to do local things, not just following the tourist routes.

My best discovery on a trip
Everywhere I go, I find one. I love the Burren Perfumery in Ireland, a wonderful accidental find. I was on a road trip with my best friend, and we got lost and saw this little sign.

The strangest thing I’ve eaten but surprisingly enjoyed
Rattlesnake.

What I learned to cook from my travels
How to make a lot of fabulous cocktails. I’m not big into cooking, just eating.

My favorite travel destination
Somewhere I have never been.
