Donatella Arpaia Launch Event AND Her New Martini Cocktail Recipe

Italy: the land of pizza, pasta, prosecco, Prada, and Jersey Shore? If that last one doesn’t throw you off, then it’s high time to be reminded of how stylish all things Italian can be. Celebrity Chef Donatella Arpaia is doing just that by partnering with iconic Italian spirits brand Martini to bring glamour back to dining and entertaining the Italian way.

The launch event celebrating her new role as Martini’s culinary and entertaining expert was held at Donatella’s DBar in Chelsea, chicly styled in all black and silver (the trendy foil to the opulent white and gold Donatella restaurant which is connected by a “secret” back door). Donatella, author of Donatella Cooks: Simple Food Made Glamorous (hyperlink to book affiliate) and a guest judge on Bravo’s “Top Chef” and Food Network’s “Iron Chef,” chose some of her Italian classics with a twist to serve at the party, like Arancini (rice balls) with orange zest and popcorn with truffle oil.

To bring some Italian taste to your next party, try this Donatella’s new signature cocktail recipe: It’s great for a Sunday Brunch or a BBQ (and it’s delicious!).

The Donatella
3 ounces MARTINI Prosecco
¾ ounces of GREY GOOSE
½ ounce of MARTINI Bianco
3 slices cucumber
1 leaves of basil
1 cherry tomato
½ ounce of lemon juice
½ ounce of simple syrup
Garnish: Campari Tomato

In a cocktail shaker place all ingredients. Muddle gently. Add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a tall glass. Top with Prosecco. Add garnish.

Kimberly Snyder

While accumulating in-depth knowledge of indigenous health practices in diverse, local communities throughout Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, Snyder discovered her calling in life: to be of service by helping others improve their lives through nutrition.

A Clinical Nutritionist (CN), Snyder philosophies are rooted in the ability of the body to naturally heal itself with food and nutrition being the key to ultimate health and beauty inside and out.

Snyder’s work as a CN incorporates a holistic approach to heal the body, increase energy, and achieve optimum health, beauty, and balance in life naturally. Her main protocols include increasing the body’s alkalinity, consuming a diet of enzyme-rich foods as close to their natural state as possible, increasing efficient digestion, and intelligent, guided and ongoing cleansing. This philosophy embodies Snyder’s belief that health and beauty are entirely synonymous: Outer beauty is a reflection of inner health.

Snyder designs eating plans, recipes and tips that work for everyone regardless of lifestyle: vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or omnivore and strongly believes that you can discover your ultimate health and beauty without having to count calories or grams of carbs.

Snyder brings her nutritional expertise to a variety of forums. She is the nutritionist for many of the entertainment industry’s top celebrities and has worked with clients on some of Hollywood’s biggest film sets. She has also been a guest and nutritional expert on many top national television programs, including Good Morning America, E!, EXTRA and Good Day LA. She has also been featured or served as a contributor to publications such as Lucky, Elle, Nylon, Fitness, Women’s Health, Hers, Real Simple, Us Weekly, OK!, InTouch and Life & Style.

Snyder is a member of National Association of Nutrition Professionals and The American Association of Nutrition Consultants. She is also a sought after holistic personal chef, and certified yoga instructor.

On March 28th, 2011, Kim launched her first book, The Beauty Detox Solution, a prescriptive diet, health and beauty book. Published by Harlequin, it has already drawn praise from celebrities and experts including Dr. Mehmet Oz, Drew Barrymore, Hilary Duff and Owen Wilson. In an ever-changing and increasingly confusing world of nutrition, beauty and weight loss-advice, The Beauty Detox Solution appears as a Godsend to people everywhere. In this book, Kim reveals that through the power of food, you can regain a healthy radiant glow, increase energy, banish acne, splotchy skin and wrinkles, grow lustrous hair and strong nails, melt away fat, loose weight and never count calories again.

Rachel Zoe Launches a Lipstick Revolution

Rachel Zoe, celebrity stylist, designer, TV star and new mom can now add the title brand ambassador to her resume.  Rachel is the new spokeswoman for Exude, “a revolution in lipstick.”

She celebrated yesterday at the Plaza where there were make-up artists on hand to apply the brand new product, available at http://www.exudelipstick.com for $29 starting in August.

PageDaily was there to try out the new colors (Rachel even said the Plum looked “Major!” on me) and talk to Rachel about the line, as well as dressing a very stylish son!

“As soon as he is old enough to realize that he has Gucci and Missoni in his closet I am ripping out all the labels…I do not want him to get wrapped up in that but for right now for me it’s so much fun.”

Rachel also dished on her love for lipstick: “I never go anywhere without a lip.  I have pictures of me around 13 with a major lip on.”

As for her favorite shade?  “The Cranberry never leaves my bag.”

The 9 shades of lip crèmes and 5 glosses come in a unique dispenser which Rachel called “a whole new way to apply lipstick.”  To avoid the typical problems associated with lipstick – breaking, melting, not retaining their shape – Exude created a one of a kind crystal lip color applicator that dispenses the right amount of product with each use.  Plus it has a special cap that prevents make-up messes from happening in your bag.

The non-sticky formula is super moisturizing and full of healthy ingredients like vitamins C and E, omegas 3 and 6, and antioxidant-rich goji berry.   Plus it has a refreshing minty scent that we love.

Celebrity Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder: Face Mapping

For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has understood that uneven color and texture on the skin, patchiness, fine lines, and breakouts are indicators of deeper issues going on within your body. Our bodies are holistically connected through energy lines called meridians that run up and down the entire body. “Face mapping” is a technique that allows us to study the face and body for common “problem areas” that are actually reversible. It is a complex healing art, but here is a taste of how what we eat shows up on our faces – literally.

A Lined Forehead: A lined forehead may indicate congestion by way of a blocked, toxin-filled colon and/or gallbladder. This usually means someone is consuming a lot of dairy or cooked animal or vegetable oils, or has a good diet, but is not cleansing as efficiently as he or should be to keep up with the toxicity that their diet is kicking up. To reverse this, add more fiber to your diet with the Glowing Green Smoothie, cut out or minimize dairy consumption, and cook with vegetable broth or coconut oil instead of easily oxidized vegetable oils.

Dark Under-eye Circles or Puffiness: Dark under-eye circles and puffiness indicate adrenal exhaustion. It’s the body’s cry for more sleep and the need to cut back on stress. Try avoiding caffeine and alcohol all together, and try transitioning to caffeine-free, antioxidant-rich teas like rooibos (as a replacement for your morning coffee). Additionally, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water between meals.

Also, the proper sodium balance is important for glowing skin that is hydrated, supple and gorgeous- but not puffy. Eating foods with the proper balance of the electrolytes of organic sodium and potassium can help, such as celery, kale, spinach, olives, sea vegetables, and Swiss chard.

Acne: Acne is often a symptom of something happening deep inside the bodies, especially if you follow a good skincare routine and are still experience regular, cystic breakouts. It can indicate a hormonal imbalance and congestion in the colon. The liver is a major detoxifying organ, and when our colon becomes overloaded, which is where the liver usually passes toxins into, it instead pushes them out through the skin, another detoxifying organ. This can erupt in the form of acne. It is helpful to take probiotics and eat probiotic-rich foods like raw sauerkraut on a daily basis, which will supply our bodies with enzymes and friendly bacteria to help keep our digestion optimal and will help our bodies detoxified on a daily basis. Avoid clogging, difficult to digest foods like dairy, soy and processed foods and start incorporating a program that includes cleansing and detoxifying with lots of enzymes and fiber to clear out the “sludge”. A daily Glowing Green Smoothie is the best way to detoxify on a daily basis.

Crow’s feet lines around the Eyes: This may also indicate that our adrenals are being overtaxed and that the body is acidic and imbalanced. Cut out smoking and caffeine, add my Glowing Green Smoothie to your diet, and cut back on your sugar intake.

Exclusive Interview With Dita Von Teese

PageDaily caught up with Dita Von Teese, burlesque star, actress, model, make-up enthusiast, spokesperson for Cointreau liqueur and now, perfumière. Read on to see what’s new in the world of Dita.

Caitlin Osborne: Your skin always looks so flawless; do you have a favorite sunscreen?
Dita Von Teese: Lets see, I like the Dior, like Dior has one that I can’t remember the name of it; but it’s a make-up based product Dior makes.

CO: How do you get the perfect red lips?
DVT: Oh, you have to have patience. You have to have a lip-liner; I prefer MAC Beet, it’s my favorite, and you have to have a really good lipstick. My favorite is DIOR Roulette Red or Dolce Vita Red.

CO: So this is your second cocktail launch with Cointreau?
DVT: Yes

CO: What’s been fun about being the face of Cointreau?
DVT: Well, I guess I’m going on like almost 5 years. I think what I love most is that when they approached me they really had a great understanding of what I do; and there would be a controversial tagline obviously about what I do and how I live my life. And, it’s like a classic French brand; Cointreau is like I don’t know, 200 years old or something, and I like the history of it. I also love that working with Cointreau opened up my eyes to how wonderful it is to be able to mix your own cocktails and how we’re so conditioned to think we can’t do it and we have to be a bartender to do it, but it’s so simple really.

CO: Do you like to entertain?
DVT: I do.

CO: Do you make up your own cocktails?
DVT: I do. It’s mostly margaritas, so I asked them, do you want to do a margarita and call it a “MargaDita”?

(Cointreau MargaDita: 1 oz Cointreau, 1 oz Silver Tequila, 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice, Bar spoon (0.5 oz) of Monin Rose Syrup, 1 pinch Chipotle Spice)

CO: I wanted to ask you too, do you have a secret to staying in shape?
DVT: I do Pilates and take ballet classes, and don’t eat too much bread. My rule is, I only eat carbs, well, I only eat bread when I’m in Paris.

CO: That’s a good rule. What’s your next big project coming up?
DVT: Well, I’m in the process of creating a perfume.

CO: I was going to ask you what scent you were wearing actually.
DVT: I’ve been working a lot in Paris, involving noses, and I guess apparently when you do celebrity fragrances, they just say, “these are the most popular fragrances, sign here”; well I didn’t want to do that. I wanted something I’d really like and would want to wear myself, so I’ve been a real pain in the ass for them in trying to find the right fragrance, so I’m in the process of testing things they’ve made for me based on what I’ve asked them to do.

CO: Well without ruining the surprise, what kind of scents do you like?
DVT: I really want something that evokes glamour, and is about big, beautiful, luscious, sexy flowers but with a little bit of a dangerous twist. I don’t want something too sweet or that smells like candy or fruit because a lot of fragrances do, but I want it to be about the glitz and glamour, something that sets you apart from everyone else.

During the month of July you can see Dita perform her variety show “Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray!” at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Dallas and Houston. For more info visit www.dita.net.

Stephanie Hirsch: Her Art & Style

Stephanie Hirsch is someone to admire – she is an entrepreneur, author, designer, and now contemporary artist. Spiritual and a dedicated mother of two, she shares with us her inspiration behind her work and lifestyle favorites.

Melissa Meyers: You were a designer, author, and now an artist. Tell us how your past has influenced you.
Stephanie Hirsch: Whichever medium I have used to express myself my goal has always been to inspire people. Being a fashion designer (especially a swimwear designer), I designed with the intention for a woman to put on one of my creations and feel confident and strong, while wearing barely anything. I wrote my book “Mother Nurture” to inspire moms around the world to go on their own journey with their child, to help guide them to be the best person they could be. Now through my artwork, I inspire people with my interpretations of different sayings or mantras through beading and embroidery.

MM: Describe yourself as an artist.
SH: I try to stay connected to the light through different sayings and mantras. I interpret the emotions of these mantras through beading and embroidery. I always try to find the humor and enlightenment and to shed a positive light on our inner struggles.

MM: What inspired you to create this type of art?
SH: I was in a dark place in my life and had lost my creativity and zest for life. I always used mantras and sayings to keep me connected to a positive state, but at that time nothing would bring me back. I needed to literally and figuratively bring these mantras and sayings to life to help me get my sense of joy and passion back.

MM: Each piece has a special message. How many of each do you create?
SH: I have created 25 pieces so far.

MM: Describe the creative process and how each piece is made.
SH: First I sketch my idea in pencil, then I transfer my sketch onto a 5 x 7 canvas. I either sew or glue the beads/rhinestones onto the canvas to create a design and use colored pencil to mimic embroidery. Once the mini canvas is created I send the finished piece to India where each canvas is hand-done and takes approx. two-three months to complete.

MM: I know you have an impressive following. Who is the Stephanie Hirsch client or collector?
SH: A person who has an emotional, passionate response to the message I am conveying. It could be because they are going through or have gone through an experience and the message speaks to them. It is purely an emotional experience. Jennifer Miller is a client and very supportive fan, so much that she will rotate pieces of my work in her Southampton location all summer.

MM: Can we commission you to do a custom beaded canvas?
SH: YES!

MM: What are the prices?
SH: $1500-$5500

MM: Where can we check out your work?
SH: Clic Bookstore & Gallery, 23 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, NY, and the Alexandra Von Furstenberg store, 9001 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, CA.

FASHION:

MM: What is your favorite item in your wardrobe?
SH: My Elise Overland black pencil skirt. It is tough but sexy. I can dress it up or down and I always look pulled together.

MM: Favorite store?
SH: Barney’s New York.

TRAVEL:

MM: You have traveled extensively to India and to many exotic islands. What were some of your favorite trips?
SH: Bali, India, Morocco, and the Negev Desert (Israel).

LIVING:

MM: Do you have tips on decorating your home with art?
SH: Whichever artwork you choose for your home should inspire and make you smile.

MM: Can you tell me one of your new must-have home décor item, style accessory, or hostess gift?
SH: A big box of candy from Sylvester & Co… no one is ever disappointed!

Buy Now, “Mother Nurture”, $3.24

“Religion is for people that don’t want to go to hell.
Spirituality is for those of us that have been there.”

There is no better saying that captures the emotion of Stephanie Hirsch’s artwork. Her work delves into the deeper or double meaning of words and sayings with both humor and enlightenment. “Initially, sayings can be static,” Stephanie says, “but once we apply our life experiences they can have infinite meanings.”

To convey her messages, she bridges the gap between fashion and art by utilizing beads and embroidery, which give her artwork a three-dimensional depth. The metallic sheen of the medium also serves to remind us that the mantras can shine a positive light on our inner struggles, both literally and figuratively.
