How To Make Your Hair Grow Longer

Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images

Long hair is one of the most sought-after styles for women. Are we really surprised, though? From a young age, girls are taught that a good head of hair can not only land you a prince, it can save your life (Thanks, Rapunzel!). In many cases, though, long hair is easier said than grown, so we turned to some of the leading stylists to get their tips for growing long, luscious strands.

Schedule Regular Trims:

You should make an appointment to see your stylist every six to eight weeks for a trim. According to Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Hair Care, “Split ends and damaged cuticles will cause your hair to appear thinner with that unwanted ‘stringy’ look. Long hair should always be thick and not weaken toward the ends.”

You will most likely only need to cut 1/2 an inch at each hair appointment, but if this tip seems counter-productive to your goal, then remember this fact from Danielle Bucco-Regazzi, Farouk Systems Creative Artist, “Healthy hair grows faster than dead hair!”

Once you’ve gotten a trim, make sure to use a leave-in serum, like White Sands The Cure 24/7 ($29.99, Whitesandsproducts.com) or TRESemmé Split Remedy Sealing Serum ($5.49, Walgreens.com). This will help further restore your hair and prevent split ends.

Cool it! “I always recommend clients wash their hair with lukewarm water, and then for their final rinse, to use cool water,” says Bucco-Regazzi. “Using cool water will help to seal the cuticle as well as leave the hair shiny. I would not advocate using hot water, because it tends to weaken the hair, often allowing the hair to fall out at a faster rate.”

Take Care Of Your Hair:

Bucco-Regazzi also recommends going to the salon once or twice a week for a deep-conditioning treatment, but if this isn’t in your budget, try an at-home treatment, like CHI Rx Moisture Therapy Conditioner ($8.99, Drugstore.com). Not only does this conditioner feed your hair vitamins to make it stronger and resilient to damage, but it helps keep hair looking shiny.

Salas also suggests that the way you comb your hair can hurt or help it. He says, “Make sure to use a wide tooth bone comb, detangling your hair from the bottom and slowly working your way up since hair is in its most delicate state wet. This will prevent unnecessary breakage from occurring.”

And since you’ll still want your hair to look picture-perfect while growing it out, you will probably be reaching for those heated styling tools. Founder and CEO of Hair Room Service, Michael Duenas, suggests you “use products that are heat protectants, so when you are using styling tools in your hair, it will not be damaged by the heat.” He recommends using Amika Obliphica Oil ($34, Sephora.com). Another great product that works with heat to nourse is Dove Thermal Replenishment Spray ($4.49, Walgreens.com). And when you can avoid using heat on your hair, do it, says Duenas. “The absence of heat will help your hair retain more moisture and stay stronger and healthier.”

Healthy Hair Starts From The Inside:

Ever heard people recommend prenatal vitamins for stronger hair and nails? Turns out it’s true! “After about a month of taking these supplements you will notice a huge change in the rate of growth in your hair,” says Duenas. “Having and maintaining a healthy diet, rich in nutrients, will affect how your hair grows as well. Keep in mind what you add to your body for fuel, aids to the beauty of your skin and hair!”

It seems like the real hurdle to long hair, though, is patience. It’s that in-between length that sends us back to the salon chair for a shorter ‘do. With these tips and products, we might actually get the extra long hair we’ve been craving. Are you growing out long hair?

The Breakfast That Helps You Lose Weight

Photo: Getty Images

It’s 7 a.m., you scarf down a bowl of cereal and two much-needed cups of coffee only to find yourself starving by 10 a.m. Sound familiar? Wellness guru Frank Lipman, M.D., says it’s all too common. In fact, almost all of us are getting breakfast “wrong,” which is leading to weight gain and fatigue. The New York City-based physician says what our bodies really need to start the day is healthy fat and protein.

How to Curb Cravings

A person’s diet, especially breakfast, should include “no gluten, no sugar and as little dairy as possible; breakfast is the meal people find the hardest,” Dr. Lipman said. “Part of the problem is that gluten is super addictive. You’re basically a drug addict, and [when you take gluten out of your diet] there’s going to be withdrawal.”

So gluten, meaning anything with wheat in it, leaves us feeling sluggish and dependent. But banishing bagels from the breakfast table is easier said than done, unless you have a decent substitute.

Dr. Lipman, who works with celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow, suggests a breakfast of gluten-free bread with almond butter, an omlette, or kipper (a small salty fish) and eggs. If you dare, you could even eat last night’s dinner for breakfast.

Alternatively, you could try his brand of health and wellness products, Be Well, which includes protein shakes, like “Recharge” ($99, Bewellbydrfranklipman.com), which are packed with the right nutrients to start your day. With 21g of protein and a blend of mixed greens and organic berries, I was full until lunchtime.

Twenty-one grams of protein sounded like a good amount to me. But Dr. Lipman’s says numbers aren’t exactly his thing. “I’m not a calorie person,” he told me, adding that we don’t need a specific amount of protein first thing in the morning, just fewer carbs and more natural foods. That also means time isn’t the most important thing to consider when preparing breakfast. So none of that eat-20-minutes-after-you’re-awake stuff, just eat when you’re ready to start the day.

Admittedly, I’ve been hesitant to drink protein shakes in the past, since the taste can be really icky, but Recharge was pleasantly bearable. After I mixed it with a glass of almond milk, I got a creamy-textured, fruit and veg-flavored smoothie.

“My attitude toward food is that we need to eat real food, not food that’s been manipulated,” he said. “Try and eat as close to nature as possible.”

3 Makeup Tips Every Girl Should Know Right Now

Photo: Getty Images

This spring is all about bright lips, shimmery smoky eyes and flawless, natural-looking skin–three makeup looks that aren’t easy to pull off. So when I met up with celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal (a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Ashlee Simpson) to celebrate her makeup brand’s 7th year anniversary (a true QVC hit), I squeezed her for some of this season’s most essential makeup how-to tips.

Why You Should Try Tangerine Tango

1. Learn to love bright lips.
It seems that almost every celebrity who walks down the red carpet these days is sporting a bright lip. The look is fresh, flirty and a welcome change after years of slicking on sheer lip gloss. But, bright lips can definitely be daunting. “It may seem really scary, but you have to train your eye to get used to it. Force yourself to wear it one day, then see how many compliments you get. Watch how great, bright, beautiful and amazing everyone says you look, then you’ll get used to it, fast!” says Roncal.

As for choosing the right color, a true coral lipstick is the most wearable. “It’s a balance of pink and orange so you get a little of both, and it works on both warm and cool skin tones,” says Roncal. A new hue that fits the bill: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Runway Coral ($15, Clinique.com).

Another wearable color: fuchsia. “It’s flattering on all skin tones, but maybe wear it as a sheer stain so it’s not over the top,” advises Roncal. Mally Beauty Life, Love, and a Really Great Lipgloss Singles in Life is Fuchsia ($15, mallybeauty.com) is a great choice. “Also, a neutral brick red is always wearable.” Avoid those bright orange colors. “They can make your teeth look yellow, like you just smoked a pack of cigarettes or drank a cup of coffee,” warns Mally.

Try On Bright New Lipsticks

2. Go ahead and be messy with eyeliner.
“Eyeliner that’s perfectly straight and sharp not only looks old fashioned, but it’s also very hard on the eyes,” says Roncal. “Eyeliner is almost always better if it has softness to it.”

So if you’re scared of botching an eyeliner application, don’t worry. Mess it up as much as you want, then use a cotton swap to blend a matching eye shadow over it and smoke it out. Dolce & Gabbana Crayon Intense Eyeliner ($29, saksfifthavenue.com) is a soft pencil that also includes a blending applicator tip for an easy blend and Mally Beauty Metallic Magic Eyeliner Singles ($15, mallybeauty.com) catch the light for a long lasting wear. “This way you’ll have all of the best elements of having a great eyeliner look and it was easy to do,” says Roncal.

Bold Lipstick Is Hot New Accessory

3. Match your foundation to your collarbone, not your jawline.
Very few women can boast that they have naturally flawless and radiant skin. And to fake it, you need to find a foundation or tinted moisturizer formula that not only feels great, but is also the right color.

“Women always think that they should match their foundation to their jawline, but that’s not true. Since you wash your face twice a day, and most likely exfoliate it regularly, your face will always be lighter than your body. To make your face match the rest of your body, you should really match your foundation to your collarbone,” advises Roncal.

New foundations we love are CoverGirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation ($11, drugstore.com) and Physicians Formula Youthful Wear Cosmeceutical Youth-Boosting Foundation + Brush. Both are light formulas for spring.

Mally also advises laying off the translucent powder. “We don’t need to wear the same technology that our grandmothers wore. Powder makes you look dusty, dry and and white,” complains Mally. Her solution: Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender ($40, mallybeauty.com) is the first clear gel-based powder that makes your skin look poreless and naturally matte. Out of the hundreds of products she’s created, it’s one of her true favorites, and I have to agree that it’s one of the most unique and effective formulas I’ve ever tried!

Get The Hottest Oscar Hairstyles At Home

by Megan Segura

We finally made it the most glamorous awards show of the year: the Oscars! Just as we expected, we saw some gorgeous gowns and amazing hairstyles. While we can’t help you score a vintage Dior dress, we have great tips to get your hair looking red-carpet ready. Wella Professionals was responsible for some of the best looks of the night, and now their celebrity stylists are sharing their tips on how they created these hot Hollywood hairstyles.

Michelle Williams
Michelle’s pixie is very modern and sophisticated chic. The hair has just enough texture to make the look sweet, yet edgy.

To Get The Look: First, start by applying Sebastian Professional Mousse Forte to wet hair, then allow it to air dry. With a small round brush, finish off with a blow dry that gives the hair more height, then use your hands to set the part and bangs. Finish the look with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to set in place.

2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

Graceful Sheen
“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

Aura recommends her A-list clientele use Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, which is designed to seal in color while leaving locks irresistibly smooth to the touch.

“Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier is a red-carpet favorite,” adds Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, “that smoothes the hair surface so it can better prepare the hair for styling.” Andy also uses Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray on his clientele to create the most sheen and expensive looking finish to any end look.

Angelic Side-Chignons
LeCompte predicts that celebs will lean toward classic styles with a play on texture and symmetry. “There will be a lot of deep side parts and loose ponys, bobs and chignons tied to the side.” This style can be customized to accentuate any gown, face shape or hair accessory. “It also lessens the stuffiness of that prom feeling and adds a more up-to-date, laissez-faire feeling.

The options here are endless, but no matter the look, you can use Wella Professionals products to perfect the end look. Apply 3-5 pumps of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier hair primer to create an even surface on each and every hair follicle before drying the hair, creating a foundation for the most luxurious looking end-look. To keep a style looking fresh yet modernly undone, use a light-hold hairspray such as Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold the hair while keeping an overall sense of liquid movement.

The red carpet arrivals of the 84th Annual Academy Awards®, will be airing February 26th on NBC. Be sure to join Wella Professionals on Twitter and Facebook LIVE during the red carpet arrivals (between 4pm and 7pm EST), along with their special guest panel of hair pros Aura Friedman, Rick Wellman and Mark Garrison to get tips, tricks and commentary on the hair looks of the evening.

Can’t wait till then? Visit the red carpet tab on Wella’s Facebook page for tips and leave questions for their experts to answer.

The Lazy Girl’s Guide To Getting Fit

It’s one thing to want to get fit, but it’s a whole other thing to actually do it. Going from couch potato to enthusiastic exerciser takes some serious motivation and a fitness plan that’s easy to follow.

We went to celebrity fitness guru David Kirsch–the man behind the bodies of Heidi Klum and Anne Hathaway–to get his tips for getting your butt off the couch and working out. His simple plan will help you get toned, without having to morph into a total gym rat.

Set Reasonable Goals
The easiest way to discourage yourself is to set an unreasonable goal–there will be no way for you to hit it and you’ll wind up getting frustrated and giving up. Kirsch recommends setting an obtainable goal, such as “I want to lose five pounds,” or “I want to fit into my skinny jeans.” It’s also important to be realistic about your time frame and the amount of exercise you do each day. “Don’t start off at two hours a day–you’ll burn out,” says Kirsch. “If you are not sure what you’re doing, find a good trainer or training material to guide you.”

Movement = Exercise
“You don’t need to go to the gym to exercise,” says Kirsch. The easiest way to start your new fitness routine is to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. “When you get out of bed in the morning, before heading to the shower, do 15 knee bends, 15 lunges and 15 crunches. When you’re making breakfast, do some isometric contractions: squeeze and release your abs, your butt, your thighs,” he says. Get your body moving with a 10 minute express workout–be it yoga or stretching or cardio–every day before work. “If you start that way and build from that, you’re more likely to stick with a program,” says Kirsch.

Find Time For Fitness
Feel like there’s no time in the day to squeeze in exercise? Kirsch says that any exercise is beneficial, no matter how little. “The reality is that our lifestyles are conflicting and everyone has different physical needs for exercise. Ideally, you should be doing an hour of exercise a day, but if you can only find time for 10 minutes, than 10 minutes of focused training beats doing nothing,” he says.

Stay Focused
According to Kirsch, the number one biggest mistake women make while exercising is not focusing on what they are doing. That means no more cell phone, no more magazines and no more TV while you are working out. “You need to make the most of your time at the gym while you are there. Sitting on the treadmill and talking on the phone doesn’t give you the exercise you really need. Whatever you are doing, focus. Connect your brain and your body so you can really focus on what you are trying to accomplish,” he says.

To Get The Look: First, apply Wella Professionals Natural Volume Styling Mousse to wet hair, then use your hands to shape your hair while it air dries. Claire Danes
Claire Danes looked every bit the belle of the ball in a gorgeous black and white J. Mendel gown and a soft, swept-back chignon. Hairstylist, Peter Butler, created Danes’ look by envisioning a modern-day Grace Kelly.

To Get The Look: The trick to creating a soft, flattering updo to is to first create a lot of volume. Butler used Wella Professionals Extra Volume Mousse on damp hair, then blow dryed it. Next, curl hair with a large barrel curling iron for extra volume, then pull hair back into a high pony and wrap it into a tight knot. (Danes’ look was only secured with TWO hair pins!) Lastly, comb back hair with fingers, coated with Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serumfor a soft sheen. Spritz with Wella Professionals Stay Essential hairsprayfor a hold that will last all night.

Then, mist hair with Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray to protect it from thermal heat while also adding texture. Use a 1-inch flat iron on hair to create soft S formations and add a natural wave texture. Finish with a mist of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray.
