Have you heard about the sexy new guilty pleasure book moms can’t stop talking about? The E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy is a “Twilight for grown-ups,” says Divalysscious Moms founder Lyss Stern who hosted the launch event for the book’s final installment with the author. Lyss answered all of our questions about the juicy read, which is nearly impossible to get your hands on in New York and beyond these days. If you don’t want to pay up to $999 on Amazon, you can email Lyss to snag a copy of Fifty Shades Freed before they’re all sold out!
Melissa Meyers: Why is this book a phenomenon?
Lyss Stern: The Fifty Shades trilogy depicts everything a woman wants from her love life! Every woman fantasizes about a man showing up one day, who whisks her around the world and gives her everything she asks for — and if the man is gorgeous, well, that doesn’t hurt! And that’s Christian Grey! The bigger story is about the love behind all the glamour. Christian and Ana are obsessed with each other and she is overwhelmed with passion every time he touches her. Every woman wants that — but only a lucky few get it — so these books are a little slice into that world and women are going crazy over it.
MM: Who is reading it?
LS: Everyone! It started with wives and moms, but now husbands and boyfriends are reading it too because they want to know how to get their women as turned on as Christian Grey does. It spells out a woman’s fantasy relationship, so if they’re not reading it, they should be! They’ll be having a lot more sex when they do.
MM: Where did the buzz begin?
LS: About six months ago, a friend of mine, who lives in Los Angeles, asked if I had read the first book. It hadn’t taken off in New York yet, but after I read it, I knew it was something every woman needed to read. I started talking about it on Facebook and blogging about it on DivaMoms.com, and I quickly noticed moms reading the books at playgrounds and heard them gush over it when I dropped my boys off to school. I got in touch with the author E.L. James and asked if she was going to be in New York around the time her third book was slated to debut. Turns out my dream came true and DivaMoms.com hosted the U.S. launch of Fifty Shades Freed at Chelsea’s Carriage House. I posted the event’s invite on my Facebook page and was at full capacity within the first two hours. I never even got to send an email blast to my database of 300,000-plus moms. My final RSVP list ended up exceeding 900 moms! If I could have had a whole weekend of events with E.L., I would have! I told her that I am renting out Carnegie Hall for her next visit!
MM: You say it hits a nerve with moms – how?
LS: Because it doesn’t hold anything back. It talks details and makes you feel like you’re Ana, drowning in her desires with Christian. Women literally get hot reading this book. They don’t call it “mommy porn” for nothing. It’s as close to porn as print can get and we aren’t used to that with a book. It’s something we’ve never read before, and we can’t get enough!
MM: E.L. is a little known British author – who is she?
LS: E.L. James is amazing! I love her! I think she’s going to be the next J.K. Rowling or even bigger. She always wanted to be a writer, but has spent the majority of her career as a TV producer. She’s now at the time in her life when she can write stories, and we are extremely thankful for it!
MM: Critics say the books are degrading to women because of the story line being based on a sexually dominant man. Is it?
LS: It isn’t because they are truly in love. The story isn’t as shallow as an older man taking advantage of a young, virginal girl, which is what people tend to assume when they hear about it. There is a real loving, caring, supportive relationship at play, and Ana and Christian enjoy amazing sex to boot. Isn’t that what every woman wants?
MM: How can one book have such an affect?
LS: Because these books are honestly like nothing else out there! You have to read them to know exactly what all the insanity is about.

Christy Turlington Burns: New Documentary, What She Loves about Being a Mom and her Best Beauty Tips
Christy’s directorial debut “No Woman, No Cry” premieres May 7th at 9:30 pm on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. Christy shared her stories and inspiration for creating the documentary at a Mother’s Day brunch hosted by Divalysscious Moms and WNBC’s “Moms & the City” on New York’s Upper East Side. She spoke to over 100 moms, including Countess LuAnn De Lesseps about the complications she had while delivering her daughter Grace 7.5 years ago. Her film, “No Woman No Cry” tells the global plight of pregnant women in four countries. Christy felt connected to these women around the world who suffer from maternal health issues but don’t have the same access to care. “People are more concerned about healthy babies,” Christy said. “We often don’t think about the Mom.” Every 90 seconds a woman dies from pregnancy complications and 90% of these deaths are preventable.
To further raise awareness, Christy created the compilation CD “Every Mother Counts” (available at Starbucks) with the help of friends J. Lo, Madonna, Rosanne Cash, Gwyneth Paltrow and others. A portion of the sales are donated to the Every Mother Counts Foundation for its maternal health programs.
What does Christy love about being a Mom? “My kids make me see things in a new way.” This Mother’s Day, all Christy wants is a day of peace and sleeping in! She certainly doesn’t need her beauty sleep but like every girl, she has her favorite products. Maybelline Fit Me Foundation looks natural and comes in colors for everyone. “My mom is Spanish and I have an olive complexion; they have colors that match me.” And to keep her model body looking beautiful, Christy practices yoga and the Tracy Anderson method.
