My Fashion Film & Video Picks

By Stacey Mayesh

I’ve recently come across some fabulously off-the-beaten-path fashion films and video clips online, and I felt compelled to share because they’ve all really inspired me. While they aren’t new, they’re all timelessly chic. For a visual junkie like me, it’s important to live life with a certain aesthetic. I get a tangible buzz from absorbing images, and they spur my creativity. So, maybe with a little downtime over the holidays, you’ll fit in some fashion film fun. Happy viewing!

Art-House Film: Designer Turned Filmmaker Tom Ford’s A Single Man
First on my list is Tom Ford’s directorial debut A Single Man. It was briefly in art-house movie theaters at the beginning of 2010, so while it’s no longer new, you probably missed it. And it’s a must see—one of the most beautifully art-directed films I’ve ever watched. Everything about it, from the lighting to the colors to the nuanced and subtle performances by Colin Firth and Julianne Moore, is breathtaking. The clothing and sets are to die for.

Fashion-Inspired Video: The Row by Actor-Turned-Designer Twins Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen
Next, It girls Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have come out with a YouTube video about their fashion line, The Row. This black-and-white short is the visual embodiment of their collection, which is one of my personal favorites. The Row, with its mix and match, mix it up sensibility, does luxe yet subtle chic better than anyone else—the ultimate basics for true fashion chicks who have the confidence to wear label-free pieces and make them their own. When you watch this short, you’ll just want to BE the girl in it…she’s so cool…and seems like such a girl’s girl…the ultimate It Girl!

Film as a Representation of Fashion: Cooler-than-Thou Fashion Line Loeffler Randall’s The Long Fall
Loeffler Randall presented a gorgeous film to represent their spring 2010 collection. Directed by Jamie Isaia, the film is a collection of beautiful moving images set to haunting music. It’s a very “editorial” video that expresses an overall attitude and feeling more than a specific message. It’s just beauty for beauty’s sake.

Movies about Fashion: Actress Kate Hudson Directs Cutlass
Cutlass, directed by Kate Hudson and shown at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, is a 70s flashback, coming-of-age story starring Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Virginia Madsen, Kurt Russell, and Chevy Chase. I thought it was fantastic, and showed that Kate Hudson has true directing chops. A very sweet film.
