Sunscreens We Love

We all know that it’s extremely important to protect our delicate skin from the sun’s harsh rays, especially during the summer! Whether you’re lounging at the beach or biking in the park, we’ve gathered a list of our favorite sunscreens. Get the proper protection your skin needs by slathering on the SPF and have some fun in the sun (in moderation of course)!

Neutrogena Fresh Cooling Body Mist Sunblock SPF 45, $9.99
Neutrogena spray sunscreen refreshes skin with it’s cooling mist while shielding you from the sun’s rays…perfect for those steamy hot days. This sunscreen is a beach bag essential for your next trip to the beach or pool. We love that it is waterproof and sweat proof too!

LA ROCHE-POSAY Anthelios 60 Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid , $18
The top-rated facial sunscreen is perfect for anyone because it quickly absorbs into the skin and leaves no residue or white film while offering maximum UV protection. This lightweight formula is easy to wear under make-up and is also waterproof, fragrance-free, PABA-free & non-comedogenic. We wear this one year round!

Avene High Protection Mineral Cream SPF 50, $21
For all of our sensitive skin gals out there this is the sunscreen for you. Avene has created this 100% mineral sunscreen specifically for those who need non-irritating protection from the sun. It has all the benefits of mineral makeup but in a sunscreen! And, it’s formula is hypo-allergenic and packed with Vitamin E.

Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Sunscreen for Body SPF 50, $23
Kiehls has done it again! This new oil-free sunscreen for the body protects against both UVB rays (the ones that cause sunburns) and UVA rays (these cause signs of aging). We love using this lightweight formula on our skin and feel confident spending time in the sun with its high SPF 50 protection. Bonus: It’s also nourished with antioxidants and Vitamin E to keep skin looking young and fresh.

Cetaphil® Daily Facial Moisturizer UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50, $20.98
As women we are always conscious and mindful of smoothing sunscreen on our faces, and this is one of the best SPF/Moisturizer combinations out there. It has all the moisturizing proprieties we expect from Cetaphil products while also dishing out a SPF 50 count for protection. It’s non-greasy formula keeps you hydrated for up to eight hours while shielding you from the sun. You can wear it under your makeup or mix it with your favorite foundation to create a DIY tinted moisturizer.

Coppertone Foaming Oil Free Sunscreen Lotion SPF 75, $8.99
The foaming oil-free formula (so cool) is a revolution in sun care. It goes on super smooth and lightweight without a greasy feeling. It’s fragrance free and non-comedogenic so it’s perfect to use on your body and face without clogging any pores. It’s a great drugstore sunscreen and the price is right!

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Targeted Sun Defense Stick SPF 50, $20
If you are a fan of the Eight Hour Cream line then this is a great product to add to your makeup bag. This sunscreen stick is perfect for getting those spots that we sometimes skip over like our earlobes and nose. It’s small enough to fit in the tiniest of day clutches so you can easily tote it around.

Tips in case you do get a little too much sun…it happens to the best of us:

1. Take an aspirin. It helps diminish the redness and swelling of a sunburn and most of all eases the pain.
2. Use a cold milk compress on your skin. Soak a washcloth is a mixture of half ice water and half milk and apply to the skin.
3. Apply the Greek yogurt you usually eat for breakfast, and smooth it over your burn. After letting set for 15 min apply some aloe vera.
4. It is important to stay hydrated! Your sunburn has caused your skin to lose a lot of moisture so drink plenty of H20 or some fresh squeezed lemonade.

We sometimes burn because we’re not sure when to reapply our sunscreen, so here is a good rule to follow. Take the amount of SPF you are wearing and multiply it by 10…that is how many minutes your sunscreen will last until you need to reapply. (15 SPF x 10= 150 minutes).

Best Body Moisturizers

When we think about skincare this time of year, the number one factor is usually sun protection.  But summer skin still craves moisture!  I’ve rounded up my favorite moisturizers to quench dry skin any time of year.

Josie Maran’s line of products contains super-hydrating Argan Oil.  This new body butter feels luxurious and has a refreshing apricot scent.

MALIN+GOETZ Neroli Hand+Body Lotion, $34

I love this lightweight and non-greasy moisturizer for summer.  Founders  Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz produce their all-natural products in their vintage-feel New York apothecary, so you can feel good about what you’re putting on your skin and where it’s coming from.

Kiehl’s Vanilla & Cedarwood Hand & Body Lotion, $26
I’m a huge fan of Kiehl’s products and recently tried their new scented body lotions full of shea butter and botanical oils to care for your skin.  This scent was my favorite.  It’s also available in Fig Leaf and Sage, which is a great unisex scent.

Lalicious Sugar Reef Body Butter, $25
This all-natural formula has an addictive tropical scent and a label with ingredients you can actually pronounce. Aloe and Vitamin E smooth skin for up to 24 hours.

Body Shop Jumbo Mango Body Butter, $19
Body Shop’s body butters are a cult favorite…everyone has their favorite scent! The ultra-rich formula is luxurious to apply and will leave your skin feeling soft and supple.

Booth’s 4-in-1 Multi-Action Body Lotion Vanilla Butter, $9.99
This delicious smelling lotion pampers your skin with all the ingredients found in the best facial moisturizers including skin-firming caffeine and essential oils.

Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion, $8.49
After trying so many lotions for extremely dry skin, I still come back to this vitamin-rich drugstore find.  If your skin is sensitive to fragrance and needs a little extra TLC, slather this on all over.  It’s extra nourishing if you apply to damp skin after the shower.

Queen Helene Cocoa Butter, $3.99
This inexpensive find is an excellent after sun moisturizer because it quenches dry skin and smells like summer!

Ask Melissa: Best Face Moisturizers at Every Price Point

Question:
My skin feels so dry this winter and I’m looking to find a new face moisturizer that not only works well but also feels good on my skin and absorbs easily. I’m pretty sensitive to fragrances and don’t like anything too perfumey. What products do you recommend?

Answer:
I can totally relate as I have dry skin all year round and a very sensitive nose too! I’ve road tested so many facial moisturizers, and have come up with my “best of” list at all different price points. These moisturizers are top notch plus they have great anti-aging properties:

SK-II Skin Refining Treatment, BUY NOW, $150
SK-II has a special scientifically proven moisturizing ingredient called Pitera, made of a fermented yeast that produces a unique blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids. This “secret key” (SK) ingredient was discovered in Japan at a sake brewery–the older people who worked there had mysteriously beautiful, age defied hands as a result of regularly immersing them in a similar fermented yeast mixture. I have been using this product for over ten years and really believe in it. The list of celebrity clients who use SK-II to keep their skin looking ageless is rather lengthy, and Cate Blanchett was a fan long before she became the brand’s ambassador.

vbeauté Buying Time Everyday Créme, BUY NOW, $135
Vbeauté is one of the best new skincare lines that was recently launched by Vogue It girl, stylish socialite and mom, Julie Macklowe. Teaming up with the top molecular biologists, Julie developed special formulas that include rare botanicals and focus heavily on preventing the onslaught of aging. The Everyday Créme is light but moisturizes intensely and can be used for day or night. The fragrance-free formula feels great on the face and is perfect for anyone who has sensitive skin looking to try a new “tried and true” anti-aging product.

Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Restoring Cream, BUY NOW, $98
A list of the best face creams wouldn’t be complete without Shiseido’s Bio-Performance. This pink hued formula in a tub boasts a patent-pending blend of ingredients which boosts skin elasticity and promotes moisture retention. It feels super luxurious on the skin and yet has impeccable firming capabilities all at the same time. I use it nightly and also before I do any outdoor activities like skiing or running- it’s great for preventing wind burn. This cream is like nothing I’ve ever used or felt before–it has a very special texture that is super nourishing on the skin!

She is a regular contributor for NBC’s Today Show and is known for her popular “Ambush Makeovers” and “Steals and Deals” segments, and sports interviews for the NY Knicks. She is also the NY correspondent for Access Hollywood landing all big celeb interviews. I love that Jill always shares her insights on the latest trends and how best to shop on a budget. She also offers great advice through her fashion self-help books, “Fashion for Dummies” and New York Times best seller “I Have Nothing to Wear.”  I caught up with the style maven to get some fashion and beauty tips, tricks and product picks!

MM: How do you best describe your look or style?
JM: Classic. I am most comfortable in jeans, a white t-shirt and ballet flats. The second I am done covering a red carpet, the heels come off and the Uggs go on!

MM: What are some recent purchases you are loving right now?
JM: My ALC Leather Dress (from 25Park.com), Alexander Wang long sleeve white t-shirt, fab turquoise earrings from Jennifer Miller Jewelry and hot pink Jimmy Choo sandals that I got at Bergdorf’s for 70% off!

MM: What is one timeless piece all women need in their wardrobe?
JM: A great pair of jeans!

MM: Who are some of your favorite designers in different price points and why?
JM: I love designers at all different price points: Dior, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Robert Rodriguez…and if you want a real deal, Zara has great pieces!

MM: What should every women splurge on?
JM: A great “schlep” bag!

MM: What are some things we can all do to de-clutter our closet?
JM: Go into your closet and take out your favorite things: blouse, jeans, sweater, slacks etc., and lay them on the bed. Then take out every other piece from your closet and if they don’t match up to the way you feel in your favorite items, then it’s time for them to go! I would rather you have 30 amazing pieces than 300 that are just “eh.”

MM: What are some tips for shopping smart?
JM: One-in, One-out (or for my mother, one-in, five-out). You shop smarter when you know you have to let something go.

Best Ways to Winter-Proof Your Hair

Taylor Swift Red BeanieSome of the most common problems people face with their hair in the winter is dry ends/split ends, cold-induced frizz, dry scalp, static, limp hair, dull-colored hair, and the ever dreaded hat hair, according to DJ Quintero, Stylist at Serge Normant in New York City. Think all hair handles winter damage equally-think again. Those with thin/fine hair or color-treated hair are more prone to breakage in the winter.

The best thing you can do to keep hair silky and shinny is to moisturize with hydrating shampoos and conditioners. “Remember your hair is an extension of your scalp. Keep your scalp moisturized,” says Quintero. Want to really give your hair star treatment?- Quintero recommends rich hair treatments like Kerastase Masque Nutri-Thermique, $60. Great for all hair-types but especially those with dry and sensitive hair, this masque contains nourishing agents to prevent dehydration.

Using an anti-frizz volumizer is key to keeping winter’s harsh ways at bay. The Rene Furterer Myrrhea Anti-Frizz Silkening Fluid, $30, protects against heat damage while adding volume. Other smart tips from Quintero: use a little oil especially on the ends which are notorious for breaking. Also, don’t over use hairsprays with lots of alcohol; strands will be left greasy and flat.

No matter what your hair problem is this winter, Quintero’s got you covered, as he shares his best styling products and tools to kick any bad hair day.
