Editors’ Picks: The Fall Fashion We’re Convinced We Can’t Live Without

Edited by Daniela Apeloig

1. Need To Own These Skinny Jeans!
I’ve always dreamed of adding leather pants to my wardrobe, but their price keeps the dream alive—and unfulfilled. The second I laid my leather-hungry eyes on these J Brand Waxed Legging Jeans, however, the gaping hole in my closet (and heart) where the pants should have been was filled. Thank you, J Brand, for these skinny jeans. I found a way to make my leather-pants dream come true.—Assistant Beauty Editor Lindsay Leff
Buy J Brand Waxed Legging Jeans, $218, at saksfifthavenue.com

2. Can’t Live Without This Blanket Coat!
I love this Vince Blanket Coat that I spotted at Saks the other day. Not only is it unbelievably soft and cozy, but it has an easy sophistication as well. I can’t wait to wear it with skinny jeans, a tee, and booties.—Social Media Staffer Kate Bryan
Buy Vince Blanket Coat, $375, at saksfifthavenue.com

3. Need This Tuxedo Dress!
I must have this Rebecca Taylor Tuxedo Dress in Denim. This versatile piece will go perfectly with tights and ankle boots, skinny jeans and heels, or just plain bare legs and sandals. Not to mention the color works year-round, and the silk fabric feels great. With its adjustable waistline and raw-edge detail at the neckline, it wins the daily trifecta: office, dinner, and late-night cocktail rendezvous. And you thought only a little black dress could be that perfect.—Editorial Staffer Kelly Tokarz
Buy Rebecca Taylor Tuxedo Dress (here in Denim), $350, at shopbop.com

4. Must Own These Flat High Boots
As a new ethical vegan (after having been vegetarian on and off for years), I try to buy products that are cruelty-free and environmentally-friendly. Cri de Coeur has been one of my absolute fave brands for trendy but vegan shoes. I just ordered these mock crocodile skin Croco Brooke Flat Boots in Sienna for fall.—Director of Business Development Preeta Sinha Zacharias
Buy Cri de Couer Croco Brooke Flat Boot, $300, at nimli.com. Get a 10% discount through September 30, 2010, with promo code FALL10.

5. NEED This Alexander McQueen Purse!
Talk about mixing leather and lace! I love this clutch’s hot combo—the feminine black-and-nude lace with the biker-edge knuckle-duster clasp embellished with skulls, flowers, and black jewels. A perfect example of the fashion genius of the late Alexander McQueen, you’ll be the envy of your fellow fashionistas.—Editorial Staffer Caitlin O’Malley
Buy Alexander McQueen Knuckle Duster Box Clutch, $2,295, at net-a-porter.com

6. Got To Get These Cynthia Rowley Shoes!
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not really a shoe person.* However, this season, I just need to have these Cynthia Rowley shoes. Comfortable, versatile, and flattering, they will be the perfect addition to any of my outfits for fall. And, in one of this season’s hottest colors, they are guaranteed to draw just the right kind of attention.—Assistant Fashion Editor Katrina Caspelich
Buy Cynthia Rowley Laced-Up Heels, $295 (available in October), at cynthiarowley.com

*Editor’s Note: Win Free Shoes! Katrina may get fired if she does not get on board with the office (translation: editor-in-chief’s) shoe obsession! 7. Must Buy This Rag & Bone Dress!
This Rag & Bone dress made of T-shirt jersey is the perfect transition piece for fall. It works easily from day to night—just swap out your shoes and jewelry, and you’re good to go. I can’t wait to wear it with tights and black booties!—Founding Editor & CEO Melissa Meyers

My Must-Have Fall Fashion Collection

By Stacey Mayesh

What’s on tap for fall 2010? Many trends continue where spring left off—with one major exception. Phoebe Philo of Celine has almost single-handedly ushered in a subtle shift in sensibility and proportion that’s more ladylike and grownup. Don’t get me wrong, there is still plenty of dark, slinky, narrow, aggressiveness this season. But Philo’s look is more refined, the silhouettes more relaxed. Think elegant navy wool cashmere jackets, silk blouses, belted waists, and slim pants. Lest it seem too staid, there was plenty of leather in unexpected places, along with one of my all-time favorite combos—navy with black.

The stage thus set, here are the must-haves to add to your fall fashion wish list as well as some of my own fall goodies that I am just jonesing to wear!

Pants
Trousers this season are going to be a bit straighter than the legging-skinniness of seasons past—still VERY slim, but not as clingy.
Buy Chloé Straight-Leg Wool Pants, $585, at net-a-porter.com

Bags
With this season’s slew of incredible bags, it’s so difficult to pick a favorite. Remember, no “flash.” Think “under the the radar,” not logos! I am loving these buttery-soft messenger bags from Angelino Clare Vivier. At $345, it’s a lot of style for the price, and they come in a great array of colors. I got a black one and one in winter white. And I love how you can wear them across your body messenger-style or as a satchel.
Buy Clare Vivier Messenger Bag, $345, at clarevivier.com

Leopard
Yes, it’s leopard, the sequel! So, resurrect something from last fall or indulge in a scarf. I like leopard print as an accessory, but go for the full-on leopard dress if you’re bold enough—just keep the rest of the ensemble ultra simple and pared down.
Buy YSL Leopard-Print Cashmere-Blend Scarf, $995, at net-a-porter.com

Red Alert
If there is one new color emerging, it’s bright red. While the biggest news for fall color (or noncolor, I should say) is camel, camel, camel (you are probably sick of reading this everywhere already!), the red accents seen on the runways were a personal favorite. Red is such a great way to punctuate a neutral fall wardrobe. So, go glam with some red Lanvin shoes, a swipe of red lipstick (matte, not shiny!), or red nail polish.
Buy Lanvin Patent Pump (here in Dark Red), $795, at kirnazabete.com

Military
Apparently, it’s time to enlist. Witness this Stella McCartney coat, a shorter Diane Von Furstenberg jacket, and skinny cargo pants from J Brand, which sent shoppers into a feeding frenzy this spring. So, if you already have them, lucky you!
Buy Stella McCartney Double-Breasted Wool Coat, $1,965, at net-a-porter.com
Buy Diane Von Furstenberg Abbe Sweater Jacket, $395, at shopbop.com
Buy J Brand Houlihan Low-Rise Skinny Cargo Pants, $240, at net-a-porter.com

Nautical Stripes
Nautical stripes aren’t going away yet . . . which makes me so happy. As I sit here writing, I am wearing my navy-and-white-striped summer tee with mini shoulder pads. Tip: Bring a nautical tee into winter by pairing with black slouchy-waist narrow pants. I love to see stripes in a knit for fall.
Buy A.L.C. Cashmere-Blend Striped Sweater, $485, at net-a-porter.com
