How To Make Your Hair Grow Longer

Long hair is one of the most sought-after styles for women. Are we really surprised, though? From a young age, girls are taught that a good head of hair can not only land you a prince, it can save your life (Thanks, Rapunzel!). In many cases, though, long hair is easier said than grown, so we turned to some of the leading stylists to get their tips for growing long, luscious strands.

Schedule Regular Trims:

You should make an appointment to see your stylist every six to eight weeks for a trim. According to Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Hair Care, “Split ends and damaged cuticles will cause your hair to appear thinner with that unwanted ‘stringy’ look. Long hair should always be thick and not weaken toward the ends.”

You will most likely only need to cut 1/2 an inch at each hair appointment, but if this tip seems counter-productive to your goal, then remember this fact from Danielle Bucco-Regazzi, Farouk Systems Creative Artist, “Healthy hair grows faster than dead hair!”

Once you’ve gotten a trim, make sure to use a leave-in serum, like White Sands The Cure 24/7 ($29.99, Whitesandsproducts.com) or TRESemmé Split Remedy Sealing Serum ($5.49, Walgreens.com). This will help further restore your hair and prevent split ends.

Cool it! “I always recommend clients wash their hair with lukewarm water, and then for their final rinse, to use cool water,” says Bucco-Regazzi. “Using cool water will help to seal the cuticle as well as leave the hair shiny. I would not advocate using hot water, because it tends to weaken the hair, often allowing the hair to fall out at a faster rate.”

Take Care Of Your Hair:

Bucco-Regazzi also recommends going to the salon once or twice a week for a deep-conditioning treatment, but if this isn’t in your budget, try an at-home treatment, like CHI Rx Moisture Therapy Conditioner ($8.99, Drugstore.com). Not only does this conditioner feed your hair vitamins to make it stronger and resilient to damage, but it helps keep hair looking shiny.

Salas also suggests that the way you comb your hair can hurt or help it. He says, “Make sure to use a wide tooth bone comb, detangling your hair from the bottom and slowly working your way up since hair is in its most delicate state wet. This will prevent unnecessary breakage from occurring.”

And since you’ll still want your hair to look picture-perfect while growing it out, you will probably be reaching for those heated styling tools. Founder and CEO of Hair Room Service, Michael Duenas, suggests you “use products that are heat protectants, so when you are using styling tools in your hair, it will not be damaged by the heat.” He recommends using Amika Obliphica Oil ($34, Sephora.com). Another great product that works with heat to nourse is Dove Thermal Replenishment Spray ($4.49, Walgreens.com). And when you can avoid using heat on your hair, do it, says Duenas. “The absence of heat will help your hair retain more moisture and stay stronger and healthier.”

Healthy Hair Starts From The Inside:

Ever heard people recommend prenatal vitamins for stronger hair and nails? Turns out it’s true! “After about a month of taking these supplements you will notice a huge change in the rate of growth in your hair,” says Duenas. “Having and maintaining a healthy diet, rich in nutrients, will affect how your hair grows as well. Keep in mind what you add to your body for fuel, aids to the beauty of your skin and hair!”

It seems like the real hurdle to long hair, though, is patience. It’s that in-between length that sends us back to the salon chair for a shorter ‘do. With these tips and products, we might actually get the extra long hair we’ve been craving. Are you growing out long hair?

Simple Summer Updos From Roy Teeluck

Hot temps and high humidity make it difficult to look elegant and effortless, particularly in the hair department. Roy Teeluck (of the eponymous Roy Teeluck Salon in New York and Miami) to the rescue with easy updos to get that hair out of your face and off your neck, and tips and tricks for the hautest hot-weather hair ever.

Sheckys: What’s an easy way to create an elegant updo this summer?

Roy Teeluck: Summer updos should be unfussy and unstructured. One of my favorite looks right now is a ballerina bun. Gather hair in a ponytail at nape of neck, securing with an elastic, then twist hair strands as you roll it into a bun. Secure with bobby pins. The bun shouldn’t be perfect; let a few loose ends stick out for added softness.

S: What’s your go-to updo suggestion for a girl who doesn’t have a ton of time?

RT: For shorter hairstyles, take a dime size amount of L’Oreal Professionnel’s Or Graphic Golden Modelling Gelee*, smooth in palms, and distribute through hair to add texture and hold. Think of Ginnifer Goodwin’s punky short cut.

For longer hairstyles, a ponytail is always classic and chic. To keep it from looking too girly, gather hair at nape of neck in a loose ponytail, secure with elastic, and gather a few strands to wrap around elastic. Secure ends with bobby pins.

S: What are your top three hair product essentials for creating the perfect updo?

RT: L’Oreal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray for hold, L’Oreal Professionnel Smooth Essence Weightless Smoother to smooth the hair cuticle and bobby pins in a range of sizes. Use ones that most closely match your hair color.

S: Any summer hair tips to keep in mind during this heat?!

RT: Minimize use of styling tools such as blow dryers and flat irons. An excellent cut and the right product will allow you to make the most of your hair’s natural texture. Don’t fight it, work with it!

P.S.: Roy also loves L’Oreal Professionnel’s Liss Ultime line; created specifically to tame frizz. The Perfecting Serum is fantastic for addressing rebellious strands and adding shine. Rub a small dab in your palms and run through ends and lightly around hair line.

Simple Summer Hairstyles for All Lengths

Summer is approaching, and Natasha Sunshine, hairstylist and founder of Santa Monica’s Byu-ti Salon, wants to ensure that everyone has an easy summer go-to style no matter the length of your hair! Check out her top three suggestions and look stylish in a cinch this summer.

SHORT HAIR:

In the summer months, fresh is the operative word for hair. Using a light styler with a touch of hold like Pureology’s Colour Stylist Nourishing Nectar Sculpting Gel ($24.98 on Amazon), slick hair back while making a side part to keep the look feminine. To ensure that this style stays modern, make your part a little deeper than usual and use your fingers versus a comb to rake hair back. Let hair dry naturally, then run your fingers through one last time to break up any crunch from product. The result will be a clean yet soft summer style, like Victoria Beckham’s picture above.

MEDIUM LENGTH HAIR:

Go for a natural look by skipping the blow dryer. First, apply your favorite styler. I love Pureology’s Colour Stylist Cuticle Polisher Shine Serum for Colour-Treated Hair ($20 on Amazon) for most hair types. Use a quarter size for thicker hair and a dime size for finer textures, and evenly distribute throughout.

For hair with a wave or curl like Kate Hudson (above), twist two-inch sections away from the face until your whole head has twists. Let air dry, then scrunch any product crunch away for a shiny, naturally wavy look.

For straighter hair, twist each section, then clip the end into a loop with a pin curl clip (you can find these at most drugstores). Let air dry completely or use a diffuser, remove clips and scrunch. You’ll end up with a fun, new textured ‘do.

LONG HAIR:

For a beautiful and easy updo, start with dry hair. Decide where your part looks best, then break the bottom section of hair into three even sections at the nape. Braid each section to the ends and secure with a rubber band. Then, take the three braids and braid them together. Roll that big braid up or under depending which way looks best, and secure with extra-long bobby pins for a classic low chignon like Jessica Alba’s (above). People will be shocked that you created such a beautiful style on your own!
