Fall Hair Trends from Fashion Week
While we are still obsessing over the amazing Spring/Summer hairstyles we saw earlier this month at Lincoln Center for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we’re also ready to step up our hair game for this season. Luckily, PageDaily was backstage at last February’s Fall 2011 Fashion Week, too, and caught up with the best hair experts in the business who gave us all the tips, tricks and product picks you need to get flawless hair this Fall!
Size may not always matter but when it comes to hair this Fall, bigger is better. Models at Bibhu Mohapatra, Cynthia Rowley, Marchesa, Vivienne Tam and L.A.M.B. sported dramatic updos like bird’s nest buns and retro pompadours.
Hair Care Products for the Dramatic Volume Trend:

Buy Now, Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel, $24
Effortlessly chic textured ponytails were also a runway favorite in February. They were windswept and natural at Rodarte; low and grungy at Tibi; and polished ‘60s mod on the side at Kate Spade. This trend is perfect for Fall’s laid-back looks but can also add some attitude to a polished black dress.
Hair Care Products for the Textured Ponytail Trend:
Buy Now, Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray, $22.99
Buy Now, René Furterer Vegetal Mousse, $23
Buy Now, Rsession Tools Pin-Up Girl Hair Styling Kit, $24.99
If last February’s shows were any prediction, we’ll be seeing lots of tousled, relaxed braids this Fall like the ones dressed with turbans at Mara Hoffman or the multiple strands we saw at HERCHCOVITCH; ALEXANDRE. We love that this look works best with dirty hair!
Hair Care Products for Braids with a Twist Trend:
Buy Now, Bumble and Bumble Grooming Creme, $26
Buy Now, Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray, $13.98
We saw romantic undone curls and waves backstage at Chris Benz, Prabal Gurung, Rebecca Minkoff, Vena Cava, Christian Siriano and Rebecca Taylor. You can achieve this easy-to-do look at home with a little help from a styling product like and by either curling hair with a small barrel curling iron and then brushing out or loosely braiding it and the applying heat with a blow dryer or flat iron. If it looks morning-after chic, you’re on the right track.
Hair Care Products for the Undone Curls & Waves Trend:
Buy Now, Ouidad PlayCurl Volumizing Foam, $22
Buy Now, Fekkai Coiff Océanique Tousled Wave Spray, $24
Buy Now, Ted Gibson Fix It Styling Gel, $7.75
If you’re not one to go crazy styling your hair, one way to update your look this Fall is with a statement-making part. Stylists’ backstage Nicole Miller and Proenza Schouler shows created severe center parts while those at Timo Weiland and Tadashi Shoji styled defined side parts. The only tool you need is a tail comb!
Hair Care Products for the Defined Part Trend:
Buy Now, Catwalk by Tigi Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray, $28
Buy Now, Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 Cushioning Blow-Dry Gel, $15.73
Rsession Tools Runway Series Pin Point Straightening Iron, $79.99

Fashion Week is NOT only about the cocktail dresses, A-line skirts, sheer blouses, and long, flowing dresses. Of course, we can’t wait to get our fashion-hungry hands on the must-have shoes, it bags, and hottest looks that came down the runway. But Fashion Week is also about the beauty trends we were dying to try the second we left the Lincoln Center tents. What we’ve been going crazy over since NY Fashion Week? The hair! Styled in grungy waves, pulled back into tight chignons, triple-braided, and pin-straight. Which trends transported us to hair heaven?
The hottest hair trends & hairstyles we’ll be sporting this fall . . .
Hairstyle Trend: Undone Curls & Waves
On the Runways Of: Chris Benz, Prabal Gurung, Rebecca Minkoff, Vena Cava, Christian Siriano, Rebecca Taylor
Unlike waves and curls from seasons past, this season’s hair look was all about undone, loose, tousled waves, floating somewhere between romantic and morning-after. While many of the waves were made with small curling irons, then brushed out for an undone, casual effect, others were created by braiding sections of hair and adding heat with either a flat iron or blow dryer. The more imperfect the waves, the truer you’ll be to this hair trend. Our favorite part—the DIY factor makes the look easy as can be.
Hair Care Products for the Undone Curls & Waves Trend:
Ouidad PlayCurl Volumizing Foam, $22
Fekkai Coiff Océanique Tousled Wave Spray, $24
Ted Gibson Fix It Styling Gel, $19.99
Hairstyle Trend: Textured Ponytails
On the runways Of: CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Fashion Show, Tibi, ADAM, Joy Cioci, Kate Spade, Rodarte
Plain ponytails? So last season! Think volume and texture vamped up to the fullest. The ponytail hair trend was windswept and natural at Rodarte; low-slung, grungy-girl at Tibi; and ’60s mod elegance with side ponytails at Kate Spade. No matter the inspiration, the key to the ponytail look here is texture, texture, texture! Add waves or curls, blend in thin braids and twists, or scrunch in texturizing spray to bring the ponytail trend up to date.
Hair Care Products for the Textured Ponytail Trend:
Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray, $26
René Furterer Vegetal Mousse, $23
Rsession Tools Pin-Up Girl Hair Styling Kit, $24.99
Hairstyle Trend: Defined Parts
Seen on the Runways Of: Lela Rose, Nicole Miller, Sachin + Babi, Tadashi Shoji, Timo Weiland, Proenza Schouler, Marc by Marc Jacobs
Deliberate, severe parts were key in the hairstyles seen on the runways for fall. Whether parted in the middle at Nicole Miller and Proenza Schouler, or deep down the side like the models at Timo Weiland and Tadashi Shoji, the parts were clearly defined and polished. Behind the scenes pro tip—use a rattail comb for foolproof hair parting.
Hair Care Products for the Defined Part Trend:
Catwalk by Tigi Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray, $19.97
Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 Cushioning Blow-Dry Gel, $15.29
Rsession Tools Runway Series Pin Point Straightening Iron, $79.99
Hairstyle Trend: Braids with a Twist
Seen on the Runways Of: Herchcovitch; Alexandre, Mara Hoffman, Erin Fetherston,
Jason Wu
We’ve seen French braids, fishtail braids, and loose side braids. We’re always up for a braid trend, and for fall, braids took a change for the interesting. And we LOVED every twist and turn. Tousled, relaxed braids dressed with turbans at Mara Hoffman evoked a warrior goddess feel. Six-stranded brands that required not 1 set of hands but 2 or even 3 represented creativity-gone-genius at Herchcovitch; Alexandre. Backstage tip—day-old hair works best to create these classic braids gone 21st century. Princess Leia would be jealous.
Hair Care Products for Braids with a Twist Trend:
Bumble and Bumble Grooming Creme, $26
Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray, $18
Hairstyle Trend: Dramatic Volume
Seen on the Runways Of: Bibhu Mohapatra, Cynthia Rowley, Marchesa, Vivienne Tam, L.A.M.B.
One our favorite hair trends making an entrance on red carpets and fall runways alike is dramatic height. Whether pulled into a tight, messy bird’s-nest bun à la Vivienne Tam or gathered into sky-high pompadours at Bibhu Mohapatra, the key to making these hair looks modern is the bigger-is-better attitude.
Hair Care Products for the Dramatic Volume Trend:
L’Oreal Professionnel Infinium 3, $24
Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel, $24

The Hottest Makeup Looks from NY Fashion Week Fall 2011
By Lindsay Leff
Another NY Fashion Week has come and gone in a whirlwind of hot makeup trends: dramatic cat-eyes, daring lips, rosy cheeks, and dewy skin, leaving us in a state of beauty overload but still craving more! While we saw some tried-and-true makeup looks, a fresh bunch of makeup trends won over our hearts—and they will be gracing your faces next fall.
Makeup artists drew inspiration from past decades (the ’60s and ’70s are back in a big way!), sexy supermodels like Jerry Hall and movie characters like Faye Dunaway in Bonnie & Clyde, and even nature! But how do makeup artists turn their inspiration into hot makeup trends that land a spot in your beauty routine rotation?
Here, the industry’s best makeup artists, the beauty trends they’re setting, and the makeup products they used on the models before they sashayed down the runways. Stay ahead of the makeup trend game with our favorite looks for fall from NY Fashion Week. Then, whip out those makeup brushes and start practicing!
Pucker-Up Makeup Trend: Bold & Bright Lips
Vamp up your glam factor with the latest lipstick trend. Shades of burgundy, crimson, and red lipsticks were painted on the lips of models at Custo Barcelona, Lela Rose, Luca Luca, and Rebecca Taylor.
Why We Love the Bold-Lip Makeup Trend
Whether you don your favorite LBD or your everyday jeans and a tee, a bold lip is like the perfect accessory—it can make your fashion look. And the right shade of lipstick can make you feel like a million bucks but cost less than $20! Stuck in a fashion rut? Swipe on a layer of one of these lipstick must-haves and you’re ready to rock!

Flawless Skin Goes Angelic for Fall’s Beauty Look
Fresh-faced, flawless skin is no stranger to the beauty-trend scene, but for fall 2011 makeup trends, the look was given a dose of angelic, doe-eyed glow. Seen at the shows of Max Azria, Joy Cioci, ADAM, Elise Overland, and Tadashi Shoji, we had to know the secret behind getting this look and doing it at home.
Backstage Tips on Creating the Angelic, Flawless Skin Look
Sometimes the simplest looks are the hardest to master. The key to the flawless, angelic skin trend is the perfect foundation. Test shades on your jawline (not wrists or hands) and always look at yourself in natural light before you buy. Foundation that looks like a mask is NOT sexy. The finishing touch for this makeup trend is a is a luminizer—a powder, spray, or even foundation with a bit of shimmer that gives your flawless skin its glow. Your friends won’t be anything but jealous of your restful look, even if you really are lacking those zzz’s.
Luminizers from the Runway for Angelic, Flawless Skin
• Maybelline Fit Me! Foundation, $6.99
• MAC Cosmetics Powder Blush in Blushbaby, $19.50
• Napoleon Light Patrol Luminizer Palette in Silver, $60
Bold Brows Will Be the Trendy Look Next Fall
Bold brows were front and center this season, as they framed the faces of runway models at the Mara Hoffman, Isaac Mizrahi, Timo Weiland, Tibi, and Christian Cota shows.
Why We Love the Bold Brow Trend
Last spring, brows were invisible, hidden by makeup artists with concealer. At NY Fashion Week, fall 2011 makeup looks were minimal to allow full, filled-in brows to make a comeback. So channel stunners like Brooke Shields, Camilla Belle, and Jennifer Connelly with the bold eyebrow trend, but keep the rest of your features bare. That leaves you time to shop for fall winter fashion trends for 2011.
Bold Brow Products Straight from the Runway
• Make Up for Ever Waterproof Eyebrow Corrector, $19
• MAC Cosmetics Impeccable Brow Pencil in Taupe, $15
• Napoleon Eye Pencil in Brown Sugar, $18
• Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Birch, $20
• Le Metier de Beauté Brow Bound Eyebrow Pencil, $36
Smokey Eye Trend Goes Technicolor
The always-on-trend smokey eye look had us mesmerized as models came down the runways of 3.1 Phillip Lim, Sophie Theallet, Prabal Gurung, Marchesa, and Chris Benz. One of our favorite makeup looks turned up the color this year!
Backstage Tip for Colorful Smokey Eyes
The smokey-eye trend is one of the best ways to dress up a makeup look and add drama. This season, the makeup trend took a twist with colors like navy, red, emerald, and beige smudged over lids. Blends of cream shadows were used to create bold color and definition. To keep the eye shadows from creasing, prep eyes with a primer. If those pesky creases still rear their not-so-pretty heads, use your finger to smudge the crease back into the shadow. Luckily, this is one makeup trend that looks best a bit unkempt.
