Cornelia Guest on Eco Style & Her New Vegan Accessories Line

Cornelia Guest, the daughter of American fashion icon CZ Guest and polo champion Winston Frederick Churchill Guest is a well-known philanthropist and entrepreneur. Cornelia’s passion for animals and nature are the sources of inspiration for her business ventures. Her most recent project is the launch of an amazing line of eco-conscious handbags. She also has a vegan catering business called Cornelia Guest Events with delicious and healthy dishes, many of which are made from produce selected at her own garden located in Old Westbury, NY. Named by Donna Karan as “One of the Women Who Inspire”, I am excited to share what Cornelia has been up to lately and of course get some of her green tips and product picks.

MM: Tell us a little about your new handbag and accessories line.
CG: I wanted to create an intelligent alternative; a line of accessories that used no animals, was luxurious, and very wearable, that you can take all day to all night.

MM: Where is it available for purchase and what is the price range?
CG: It’s available at Bloomingdale’s, Bloomingdales.com, Target, Tootsies, C.Orrico and boutiques around the country. A list of stores is available on CorneliaGuest.com. All under $350.00.

MM: Three words to describe the collection?
CG: Humane, affordable, beautiful.

MM: Most of the vegan handbags on the market are lacking in style- how did you do it, and so well- I love them!
CG: Thank you. It’s a compilation of all the things I love and I asked lots of my friends for help!

MM: A lot of people hear the words “cruelty-free” tossed around, what exactly does that mean to you?
CG: “Cruelty-free” means “humane.” No animals are ever hurt while making my products. My cookies are also cruelty-free. My book, which is coming out June 12, 2012, “Simple Pleasures,” is a humane, cruelty-free lifestyle book.

MM: What are some of your favorite vegan finds?
CG: Clothing: Stella McCartney
Restaurants: NYC Angelika Kitchen, Organic Avenue
Shoes: I’m working on my own. That’s my next task.

MM: Who are some of your favorite designers?
CG: Badgley Mischka, St. John, J.Crew, Levi’s, American Apparel

MM: How would you describe your personal style?
CG: My style is humane and classic with a twist.

MM: Name three of your eco-conscious staples?
CG: Fine & Raw Chocolate, Juice Press, CleanWell sanitizing wipes, and Dr. Frank Lipman’s Sustain Protein Supplement powder for smoothies.

MM: What’s in your make-up bag?
CG: Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara, MAC VivaGlam because it goes to AIDS charity, lypo-spheric vitamin C.

MM: What type of skincare do you use?
CG: Joanna Vargas — all her products, and I swear by her facials!

MM: What about hair care? Yours always looks so good!
CG: Wen. I LOVE their shampoo and Nikki Ray at AKS Salon cuts it.

MM: What do you do to de-stress?
CG: Pilates, dance, play with my dogs. I love the water. The ocean is the best de-stresser ever!

MM: What tips do you have for someone who would like to transition to a vegan lifestyle?
CG: Find what humane, cruelty-free products you like and slowly start to incorporate them into your daily life. Bit by bit, baby steps grow into big steps.

TIP: Coarse terrycloth towels can disrupt curl patterns. Try a microfiber towel for less frizz! Sleeping on a microfiber pillowcase will also keep curls better.

Section the hair into two or three horseshoe-shaped sections around your head. Starting at the nape of your neck, twist in a small amount of Pureology Colour Stylist Illuminating Curl Stylist 24 Hour Shaping Lotion (maybe a couple pearls per section). Wrap sections around one or two fingers, depending on how much wave you have. Next, diffuse hair with blow-dryer on low to medium force and heat. Do not separate the hair as it dries. Instead, cup the curls in the diffuser, holding the nozzle several inches off the scalp. Dry hair to 90%.

TIP: Over-drying hair is a frizz catastrophe! When in doubt, stop sooner rather than later and let hair air-dry the rest of the way.

Finally, apply a nickel-size amount of Pureology Colour Stylist Anti-Breakage Twist Shine Texturizer and work into hands. Run the defining cream through waves to break up curls and add shine. If needed, use the 1-inch iron by coil-wrapping around the barrel, holding the ends loose to keep the organic feel. This trick is great to polish unruly shorter layers or fringe!

Warm Up with Spa Night

With temperatures fall-ing, we’ll soon be tempted to avoid all outdoor activities and spend our downtime hibernating under the covers. So, what better time than now to pamper and prep ourselves for the harsher temps ahead? Drown out a case of the Mondays with any or all of these six picks. -Samantha Sutton Read all the customer reviews on mark’s Calm Yourself Hydrating Mask ($9) and you’ll definitely feel the urge to test it for yourself. After using a cleanser, apply the mask to fix dry skin and protect it from future harsh skin-ditions. Bubbles plus a long, warm bath will help you escape the cold temps! Aveeno Stress Relief Foaming Bath ($5.99 on Target.com) will moisturize your skin as you soak, and its calming lavender scent promises to erase any worries. We love The Body Shop! Their products love us back too, especially their Peppermint Cooling Pumice Foot Scrub ($14). The fresh smell combined with miracle-working bits of pumice stone will leave your puppies feeling smoother than ever! One of the hottest nail trends this year is crackle polish, and I personally love it because it’s so low-may (those chips are way less noticeable). Sephora by OPI’s Blasted Nail Colour ($9.50) comes in a variety of different cracked shades that are perfect for an at-home mani/pedi. Celebs swear by Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter ($35) and it’s no wonder! It deeply hydrates dry skin for 24 hours but has a super-light feel—and a great smell! Nothing is more relaxing than chilling in comfy clothes! Stay warm and snug in this Sweater Robe ($44.50) from Victoria’s Secret, paired with these cute Old Navy Sweater Knit Booties(SALE: $19.50) which are perf for a case of cold feet. GIRL TALK TIME: What do you think of these products? What beauty makes you feel like you’re at a spa?

Fab Fixes for the Worst Beauty Crimes

Unfortunately, beauty has a bad side. Between late nights, stress and, sometimes, just plain laziness (consider me guilty as charged!), our appearances can go horribly awry. In honor of today’s Partner-in-Crime Girlfriend (have you told us why SHE is your Partner-in-Crime Girlfriend in the National Girlfriend Awards yet?), we’re letting the crime fit the punishment with fab fixes for your biggest beauty law-breakers.

CRIME: Late-Night Laziness

PUNISHMENT: Late nights and a little too much wine can often lead to laziness, especially in the skincare department. After all, isn’t that 10-15 minutes it takes to remove your makeup better spent in bed? Alas, waking up with mascara on your cheeks and foundation on your pillow is never fun. Cut your nightly beauty routine in half with Olay’s Daily Facial Express Wet Cleansing Cloths for Sensitive Skin (SALE: $4.49 at CVS). These pre-moistened wipes are alcohol- and fragrance-free and contain skin-nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and aloe—they even take off water-proof mascara! Perfect for ladies with sensitive skin and those who would like to get some shut-eye, ASAP (uh, everyone?!).

CRIME: Dark Under-Eye Circles

PUNISHMENT: So that double shot of espresso might be a totally necessary start to your day (and night), but too much caffeine and lack of sleep will start to show eventually. Fight tired eyes and dark circles with Aveeno’s Active Naturals Smart Essentials Anti-Fatigue Eye Treatment ($9.59 on Drugstore.com). This easy-to-apply product comes in a roller ball that massages eyes to reduce puffiness while distributing anti-aging antioxidants like Southernwood and vitamins E and C. Bright eyes are just a swipe away!

CRIME: Bald Brows

PUNISHMENT: If eyes are the windows to the soul, then make sure they look awesome by not over-plucking your eyebrows. Thicker, more natural-looking brows have been the trend for a few years now and there is nothing sadder than seeing a pair of unflattering, pencil-thin brows. The key to a great at-home pluck session is backing aaaaway from that fluorescent-lighted, magnified mirror (use natural light and stand back a bit, believe it or not!) and dropping the hard-to-hold tweezers for an easy-to-wield option like the Tweezerman Slant Tweezer ($20). The shape and fullness of brows should complement your face, which means being able to see your entire face before and during plucking.

CRIME: Popping Pimples

PUNISHMENT: Pimples have the worst timing (job interviews, weddings, first dates), but drop the rubbing alcohol and tweezers already (popping a zit will probably just result in blood and having to cover an unsightly spot with concealer, anyway!). Try Neutrogena’s Rapid Clear 2 in 1 Fight and Fade Gel ($8.99 at Target) to effectively zap zits. Good guys like salicylic acid help erase pesky spots and fight any fade marks after the fact.

CRIME: Hair Help

PUNISHMENT: Every now and then I go a little crazy with the styling tools—I have a pretty intense relationship with my blow-dryer (…and my flat iron, curling iron, etc. ). Add over-styling to all that summertime humidity and fun (like swimming), and anyone’s tresses can get into some serious trouble. So, sentence your strands to Oribe’s Shine Supershine Moisturizing Cream ($49 at Neiman Marcus), a lightweight, creamy leave-in conditioner that moisturizes hair while fighting frizz, humidity and even defining curls—all while creating shiny and touchable hair.

What beauty crimes are you guilty of committing? How do you help punish your bad habits? What do you think of our fixes?

Your 5-Minute Beauty Routine

Applying makeup doesn’t have to be a long and expensive process. Check out my top picks for beauty products/makeup that will have you done up in just five minutes, all for under $25 each! Makeup enthusiasts and phobes alike are sure to be down with these product suggestions that will have you looking fierce, fast.

Summer beauty starts with getting skin pampered and hydrated, and the best thing to get your face looking its best is a…facial. Garden Botanika’s Corrective Clearing Face Mask ($18) gives your face a smooth look right from the first application. We all know that first impressions are everything, so make sure a good facial is part of your beauty routine.

This season, bronzers are all the rage, and every woman wants that special glow. Physicians Formula’s Shimmer Strips Custom Bronzer, Blush & Eye Shadow ($11.95) is a complete compact for every aspect of your look. Whether you want to rock a bronzed look on the eyes or cheeks, this palette has you set for a glamorous glow on the go!

To achieve a flawless look, your pout has to be perfect, and a fun shade always attracts a ton of attention. A great pop of color that’s suitable for most skin tones is Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Ultra Lipstick ($22.50) in Watermelon. The color is vibrant and fresh, and will keep your lips nourished while you’re looking glam.

Want to make a simple look pop on a whole new level? I am crazed over Jemma Kidd’s JK In Vogue Perfect Blush Collection ($18 at Target) because it’s a great blend of corals, peaches, fuchsia and a splash of shimmer. Each blush palette holds its own with the color schemes they feature, but our favorite is 5th Avenue because it really makes your cheeks come alive!

We all need to keep our skin moisturized with SPF, but sometimes that awful white residue is less than appealing. Now, the best way to get SPF is with a touch of color like e.l.f.’s Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 ($3), which comes in a variety of skin shades and is very lightweight. It’s such a necessity for a quick color boost and it helps keep your skin protected.

Want to achieve a simple look on a less glamorous day? Grab a moisturizer that’s also a simple lip balm with a touch of color. Avon’s Slick Tint for Lips ($.99) is great for not being too much, but still showing off your pucker. The lip balm comes in a sheer pink, a deep reddish wine and a rosy pink, all at an amazing price!
