7 Top Ways to Make Your Cardio Workout More Efficient

Within your week, a cardiovascular workout is one of the most essential workout routines that you can focus on. You could never get your dream body by just lifting weights because cardio workouts are necessary to increase your metabolism’s speed and help you lose weight. It also gets your heart rate up which means that your heart is getting in its workout. As your heart pumps, it distributes blood to all the parts of the body more efficiently which is needed for all your organs. Try getting in at least 30 to 60 minutes of cardio workouts at least 4 to 5 times a week. Here are the 7 top ways to make your cardio workout more efficient.

1.            Choose a cardio routine that you enjoy

Simple fact, doing something that you do not enjoy will not work out too well. That goes the same for cardio workouts. If you are currently working on a cardio workout that you do not enjoy doing then do yourself a favor and STOP! Choose another type of workout that could get your heart rate pumping. If running on the treadmill is boring to you, try running outdoors so you can enjoy the scenery and get some fresh air. You could also try swimming, dancing, boxing and other cardio workouts.

2.            Have a plan

Before you start, have a plan for yourself. This plan could tell you when you should increase your cardio workout and how many minutes and days you should be doing it. Remember to work out for yourself and not against it.

3.            Warm up before every workout

Before any type of workout that you do, make sure to warm up. Stretch your muscles before doing the major workout so you do not pull anything. Also, warming up increase blood flow and prevent strains.

4.            Change up your cardio workout

Try changing up your cardio workout. Although doing one workout could still be effective, try mixing it up so you will not get too bored in doing one thing. Challenge yourself mentally and physically. If you work out inside, try working out outside.

5.            Log in your cardio exercises

To help you keep track of your workouts, try logging in when you get in some cardio workouts. Take note of your current weight, number of days you work out, the distance, the length and your goals. This could help you motivate yourself more and improve your run each and every time.

6.            Have a cardio workout partner

If you get bored working out by yourself, try having cardio partner to help get you going. Try motivating one another in doing more so that you cardio workout could be more effective each and every single time.

7.            Listen to some workout music

Get your MP3 player and load it up with a few good workout songs. Make sure to choose songs that could help you run faster and help you concentrate and focus on other things besides the pain and soreness of working out.

How To Make Your Hair Grow Longer

Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images

Long hair is one of the most sought-after styles for women. Are we really surprised, though? From a young age, girls are taught that a good head of hair can not only land you a prince, it can save your life (Thanks, Rapunzel!). In many cases, though, long hair is easier said than grown, so we turned to some of the leading stylists to get their tips for growing long, luscious strands.

Schedule Regular Trims:

You should make an appointment to see your stylist every six to eight weeks for a trim. According to Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Hair Care, “Split ends and damaged cuticles will cause your hair to appear thinner with that unwanted ‘stringy’ look. Long hair should always be thick and not weaken toward the ends.”

You will most likely only need to cut 1/2 an inch at each hair appointment, but if this tip seems counter-productive to your goal, then remember this fact from Danielle Bucco-Regazzi, Farouk Systems Creative Artist, “Healthy hair grows faster than dead hair!”

Once you’ve gotten a trim, make sure to use a leave-in serum, like White Sands The Cure 24/7 ($29.99, Whitesandsproducts.com) or TRESemmé Split Remedy Sealing Serum ($5.49, Walgreens.com). This will help further restore your hair and prevent split ends.

Cool it! “I always recommend clients wash their hair with lukewarm water, and then for their final rinse, to use cool water,” says Bucco-Regazzi. “Using cool water will help to seal the cuticle as well as leave the hair shiny. I would not advocate using hot water, because it tends to weaken the hair, often allowing the hair to fall out at a faster rate.”

Take Care Of Your Hair:

Bucco-Regazzi also recommends going to the salon once or twice a week for a deep-conditioning treatment, but if this isn’t in your budget, try an at-home treatment, like CHI Rx Moisture Therapy Conditioner ($8.99, Drugstore.com). Not only does this conditioner feed your hair vitamins to make it stronger and resilient to damage, but it helps keep hair looking shiny.

Salas also suggests that the way you comb your hair can hurt or help it. He says, “Make sure to use a wide tooth bone comb, detangling your hair from the bottom and slowly working your way up since hair is in its most delicate state wet. This will prevent unnecessary breakage from occurring.”

And since you’ll still want your hair to look picture-perfect while growing it out, you will probably be reaching for those heated styling tools. Founder and CEO of Hair Room Service, Michael Duenas, suggests you “use products that are heat protectants, so when you are using styling tools in your hair, it will not be damaged by the heat.” He recommends using Amika Obliphica Oil ($34, Sephora.com). Another great product that works with heat to nourse is Dove Thermal Replenishment Spray ($4.49, Walgreens.com). And when you can avoid using heat on your hair, do it, says Duenas. “The absence of heat will help your hair retain more moisture and stay stronger and healthier.”

Healthy Hair Starts From The Inside:

Ever heard people recommend prenatal vitamins for stronger hair and nails? Turns out it’s true! “After about a month of taking these supplements you will notice a huge change in the rate of growth in your hair,” says Duenas. “Having and maintaining a healthy diet, rich in nutrients, will affect how your hair grows as well. Keep in mind what you add to your body for fuel, aids to the beauty of your skin and hair!”

It seems like the real hurdle to long hair, though, is patience. It’s that in-between length that sends us back to the salon chair for a shorter ‘do. With these tips and products, we might actually get the extra long hair we’ve been craving. Are you growing out long hair?

3 Makeup Tips Every Girl Should Know Right Now

Photo: Getty Images

This spring is all about bright lips, shimmery smoky eyes and flawless, natural-looking skin–three makeup looks that aren’t easy to pull off. So when I met up with celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal (a favorite of Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, and Ashlee Simpson) to celebrate her makeup brand’s 7th year anniversary (a true QVC hit), I squeezed her for some of this season’s most essential makeup how-to tips.

Why You Should Try Tangerine Tango

1. Learn to love bright lips.
It seems that almost every celebrity who walks down the red carpet these days is sporting a bright lip. The look is fresh, flirty and a welcome change after years of slicking on sheer lip gloss. But, bright lips can definitely be daunting. “It may seem really scary, but you have to train your eye to get used to it. Force yourself to wear it one day, then see how many compliments you get. Watch how great, bright, beautiful and amazing everyone says you look, then you’ll get used to it, fast!” says Roncal.

As for choosing the right color, a true coral lipstick is the most wearable. “It’s a balance of pink and orange so you get a little of both, and it works on both warm and cool skin tones,” says Roncal. A new hue that fits the bill: Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Runway Coral ($15, Clinique.com).

Another wearable color: fuchsia. “It’s flattering on all skin tones, but maybe wear it as a sheer stain so it’s not over the top,” advises Roncal. Mally Beauty Life, Love, and a Really Great Lipgloss Singles in Life is Fuchsia ($15, mallybeauty.com) is a great choice. “Also, a neutral brick red is always wearable.” Avoid those bright orange colors. “They can make your teeth look yellow, like you just smoked a pack of cigarettes or drank a cup of coffee,” warns Mally.

Try On Bright New Lipsticks

2. Go ahead and be messy with eyeliner.
“Eyeliner that’s perfectly straight and sharp not only looks old fashioned, but it’s also very hard on the eyes,” says Roncal. “Eyeliner is almost always better if it has softness to it.”

So if you’re scared of botching an eyeliner application, don’t worry. Mess it up as much as you want, then use a cotton swap to blend a matching eye shadow over it and smoke it out. Dolce & Gabbana Crayon Intense Eyeliner ($29, saksfifthavenue.com) is a soft pencil that also includes a blending applicator tip for an easy blend and Mally Beauty Metallic Magic Eyeliner Singles ($15, mallybeauty.com) catch the light for a long lasting wear. “This way you’ll have all of the best elements of having a great eyeliner look and it was easy to do,” says Roncal.

Bold Lipstick Is Hot New Accessory

3. Match your foundation to your collarbone, not your jawline.
Very few women can boast that they have naturally flawless and radiant skin. And to fake it, you need to find a foundation or tinted moisturizer formula that not only feels great, but is also the right color.

“Women always think that they should match their foundation to their jawline, but that’s not true. Since you wash your face twice a day, and most likely exfoliate it regularly, your face will always be lighter than your body. To make your face match the rest of your body, you should really match your foundation to your collarbone,” advises Roncal.

New foundations we love are CoverGirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation ($11, drugstore.com) and Physicians Formula Youthful Wear Cosmeceutical Youth-Boosting Foundation + Brush. Both are light formulas for spring.

Mally also advises laying off the translucent powder. “We don’t need to wear the same technology that our grandmothers wore. Powder makes you look dusty, dry and and white,” complains Mally. Her solution: Mally Beauty Evercolor Poreless Face Defender ($40, mallybeauty.com) is the first clear gel-based powder that makes your skin look poreless and naturally matte. Out of the hundreds of products she’s created, it’s one of her true favorites, and I have to agree that it’s one of the most unique and effective formulas I’ve ever tried!

How-to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Tips from Exhale Spa’s Nutrition Intuition

In the health and wellness world, March is the month dedicated to nutrition awareness and at exhale we decided to celebrate with a day of awareness entitled NUTRITION INTUITION.

I was joined by two of exhale’s healers: Laura Benge, our National Spa Director and Rachel Lustgarten, R.D. nutritionist, Keri Glassman, nationally recognized nutrition expert, Katie Lee, Cookbook author and lifestyle expert, and Jeremy Bearman, Executive Michelin- starred Chef of Rouge Tomate NYC for a panel discussion on how to incorporate good nutrition, simple cooking and tasty food  into your life on a daily basis.

We spoke on the difficulties of maintaining a healthy lifestyle day to day and some takeaways on solving those challenges; tips like how to cook a nutritious meal in less time than ordering delivery! Prepare raw foods as soon as you bring them home from the market: clean the greens, wash the lettuce, chop the vegetables and store them in containers to be used during the week as dedicated meals or reliable sides for chicken or fish.

Keri made the point that a holistic lifestyle is key to a lean, sexy, happy body. And that it’s not just the food that you eat but your sleep, stress reduction techniques and peacefulness of your home space will all factor in to maximizing health and wellness. According to Keri, a spritz of lavender in the bedroom is a great start to a sleep worthy space! Katie suggested to start your week with a good nutrition plan and if you cheat a little on the weekend, you can start again on Monday. She also shared that preparing foods in advance, like boiling a pot of rice, quinoa or lentils, or steaming a bunch of broccoli and refrigerating are easy ways to stay on track.

2012 Oscar Hair Predictions From The Pros

Hollywood’s “Night of Nights” is right around the corner, and while we don’t know who will take home the oh-so-coveted Oscar Awards, we do know that all you beauty junkies out there will be mentally casting your vote for Oscar superlatives – who has the best dress, the best accessories and of course… who has the best hair?

We spoke with the pros at Wella Professionals, the hair brand who has a very impressive roster of red carpet hair under their belt already from this season, including Madonna, Michelle Williams, Claire Danes, Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Emily Blunt and Shailene Woodley, to get the inside scoop on what hair looks will heat up the red carpet this Sunday.

Graceful Sheen
“We will see a peak in fluid textures and warm tones that suggest effortless elegance and healthy, shiny hair that shows a lot of movement and bounce,” states Wella Professionals Color Ambassador Aura Friedman. “Expensive and Luxurious are words you could use to explain this look – maximize this effect by asking your colorist to use Wella Professionals Haircolor to give you a soft shade with warm undertones that will best complement your skin tone.”

Aura recommends her A-list clientele use Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner, which is designed to seal in color while leaving locks irresistibly smooth to the touch.

“Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier is a red-carpet favorite,” adds Celebrity Stylist Andy LeCompte, “that smoothes the hair surface so it can better prepare the hair for styling.” Andy also uses Wella Professionals Shimmer Delight Shine Spray on his clientele to create the most sheen and expensive looking finish to any end look.

Angelic Side-Chignons
LeCompte predicts that celebs will lean toward classic styles with a play on texture and symmetry. “There will be a lot of deep side parts and loose ponys, bobs and chignons tied to the side.” This style can be customized to accentuate any gown, face shape or hair accessory. “It also lessens the stuffiness of that prom feeling and adds a more up-to-date, laissez-faire feeling.

The options here are endless, but no matter the look, you can use Wella Professionals products to perfect the end look. Apply 3-5 pumps of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier hair primer to create an even surface on each and every hair follicle before drying the hair, creating a foundation for the most luxurious looking end-look. To keep a style looking fresh yet modernly undone, use a light-hold hairspray such as Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray to hold the hair while keeping an overall sense of liquid movement.

The red carpet arrivals of the 84th Annual Academy Awards®, will be airing February 26th on NBC. Be sure to join Wella Professionals on Twitter and Facebook LIVE during the red carpet arrivals (between 4pm and 7pm EST), along with their special guest panel of hair pros Aura Friedman, Rick Wellman and Mark Garrison to get tips, tricks and commentary on the hair looks of the evening.

Can’t wait till then? Visit the red carpet tab on Wella’s Facebook page for tips and leave questions for their experts to answer.

Then take out every other piece from your closet and if they don’t match up to the way you feel in your favorite items, then it’s time for them to go! I would rather you have 30 amazing pieces than 300 that are just “eh.”

MM: What are some tips for shopping smart?
JM: One-in, One-out (or for my mother, one-in, five-out). You shop smarter when you know you have to let something go.

Bat Your Lashes Down The Runway

Bat Your Lashes Down The Runway

Fashion Week is full of the kind of energy that makes you stop and think, the kind that excites you and elevates your tastes to another level. It brings out the inner hunger that we all share to embody our personalities through fashion. It follows, then, that when models grace the runway, every little bit of their look is dissected, from lip color to heel height. This season, look to their lashes to highlight emerging trends in the beauty sphere that are sometimes more artistic than practical. Here, founder of EnvyDerm Eyelash Growth Serum, Volume Mascara, and Intense Liquid Eyeliner, Nadia Smith, shares her take on which lash trends to look out for, and how to get the look at home.

Long, Thick Lashes

Long, luxurious lashes are a staple in the fashion world. Although they might not be as unique as the other trends that have recently popped up, they are a classic staple in the realm of beauty.
Nadia says, “This season, as clean lines and defined cuts follow in the minimalist direction, some designers will likely follow this theme and maintain natural lash looks. With products that work while you use them, like EnvyDerm, you can achieve this look simply by applying your makeup.”
This is a great trend to try out at home, and you’ll have your friends asking, “Are those real?”

Tips for Application:
·
Apply EnvyDerm Lash Growth Mascara to clean, dry lashes.
·
Swirl while applying for maximum impact. Allow one minute between layers.
·
Apply EnvyDerm Intense Liquid Eyeliner to clean, dry lash line.
·
Wipe excess off brush and draw a line along the upper lid, beginning from inner corner.
·
If you want to grow longer lashes without using the makeup products, try EnvyDerm Eyelash Growth Serum. Apply to lash line the same way as you would liquid eyeliner.
·
Extra tip: also works on eyebrows!

Feather False Eyelashes

Beware: this trend is tough on the eyelids. Feather eyelashes can be heavy, but if you’re going for an over-the-top look, you can guarantee that these will be a showstopper. “Feather eyelashes are the kind of trend that we see emerge during Fashion Week because they are unique and fun. Fashion designers are artists, and with art comes the drama of the avant-garde.” Feathers were a big hit in the hair for the last season, so look for this to evolve into lashes for the fall.

Tips for Application:
·
Curl lashes with eyelash curler.
·
Adjust the width to fit your specific eye shape.
·
Apply adhesive and allow about 10-15 seconds for drying.
·
Place false lashes on upper lash line, working from the outside in.

Paper False Eyelashes

Hoping to upstage all other lash trends this season, a new look is here: paper eyelashes. Following the tradition of Chinese paper cutting, these lashes take falsies to a new level. Pioneered by company PaperSelf, the lashes feature animals such as horses, butterflies, and peacocks. “Paper lashes have just hit the beauty market, and have really changed the idea of false lashes. These designs are themselves works of art, and have surfaced just in time for the runways,” says Nadia.

Tips for Application:
·
Choose your size: small (for corners) or full (for entire lash).
·
Apply much like false lashes, but remember to test them out beforehand.
·
Make sure to cut and alter lashes to fit the length and width of your eye shape.
·
Extremely careful application is required due to the delicate nature of the paper.

Packing Tips With Countess LuAnn

Real Housewives of New York star Countess LuAnn de Lesseps just got back from a three-week trip to Corsica and Paris and all she brought with her was a single carry on! LuAnn made it back just in time to view the reunion shows which air on Bravo on Monday, July 25th and Monday, August 1st (two 90 minute specials).

Don’t believe it?  Read on for Countess LuAnn’s tips on how to pack light with style.

Think before you pack: “Instead of packing individual items and trying to piece an ensemble together later, lay everything out and plan your outfits ahead of time.”

Travel in your bulkiest pieces: “Things like sweaters and comfortable shoes tend to take up the most space in your bag, so plan to wear those items en route to your destination.”

Go basic: Packing neutral items allows for flexibility in your wardrobe. Pieces like a fitted blazer, a LBD, or sexy jeans can be dressed up with accessories to go seamlessly from day to night. “I like to travel with fun costume jewelry, which takes up less room, and helps turn a basic item into a bold statement.”

Stay pressed: Countess LuAnn’s trick for fighting wrinkles is to roll dresses in plastic bags. “It will prevent creasing so you don’t have to worry about finding an iron.”

Rinse and Repeat: Consider staying at a hotel with laundry service. Otherwise, you can pack travel detergent like Travelon Laundry Soap Sheets for a quick wash in the sink.

In addition to the release of her new dance single “Chic, C’est La Vie” available on iTunes, Countess LuAnn also has just developed and released a new iPhone app available through the Apple Store.

Sun Protection Tips from Dr. Kenneth Mark

With the recent FDA regulations, we wanted to offer some sunscreen tips for your consideration from board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs skin cancer surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Mark. Dr. Mark is a credible expert with four prestigious practices, including two in the Hamptons (he is celebrating his 10th-year anniversary practicing in East Hampton and Southampton this summer), one in Aspen, and one in NYC. He is also a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University.

TIP 1: New FDA regulations on sunscreen

o   The main benefit of the new FDA regulations is that there will be increased knowledge and transparency to the consumer for the UVA protection in products and education of SPF designations, which only addressed UVB protection

o   Since SPF designation relates to UVB protection from getting a sunburn, these new regulations help consumers understand that it is actually the UVA rays which penetrate the skin deeper and cause harmful effects on the skin, from aging to cancer.

TIP 2: How often should you apply sunscreen

o   When in direct sunlight (at the beach, outside), apply sunscreen at least every two hours. If you are sweating or swimming, reapply every 30 minutes after significant water exposure.

o   When you are in and out of the sun, apply your sunscreen two or three times throughout the day.

TIP 3: What are the most important ingredients to look for in a sunscreen

o   You should always use a sunscreen with a physical blocker, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (both work to block out full UVA and UVB spectrum).

o   Most sunscreens have excellent UVB protection, so with products that don’t have those physical blockers, look for UVA-blocking chemicals, including:

–  Parsol 1789 (a.k.a. Avobenzone)

–  Ecamsule

–  Mexoryl

–  Antihelios

–  Helioplexhttp

TIP 4: What sunscreens are recommended

o   Z-Silc has a wonderful sunscreen that has a full range of UV protection and rubs in smoothly.

o   I would also recommend Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist, which contains Helioplex.

Everything You Need to Know About Jewelry this Summer:
Carol Brodie Shares Her Best-Kept Secrets

From Harry Winston to HSN, Carol Brodie has accumulated a vast knowledge of information and celebrity style tips. Her virtual jewelry boutique, Rarities Fine Jewelry with Carol Brodie, can be found on HSN as can her monthly visits which feature roughly 35 to-die-for new styles at affordably fabulous price points. If you are dreaming about wearing everything on Barney’s first floor… dream no more. Carol’s collection is chock full of her favorites… which are bound to become yours. Here are her tips for summer-fabulous sparkle:

What are the best investment pieces for this summer?

Blackened jewelry will be all the rage this fall, so how about starting now by buying pieces that pair gold and silver such as the Champagne Diamond Vermeil Disc-Shaped Earrings. The Indian Mughal Dyansty was the inspiration for these earrings which celebrate the sun and the treasures of the earth. A long layering necklace is so important all year long… try this one to update every summer mini and maxi. And don’t forget the cuffs… worn single or by the pair, cuffs always provide the necessary extreme makeover!

Buy Now, Smoky Quartz “Circles” Necklace, $849.90
Buy Now, Gemstone and Enamel “Dragonfly” Cuff Bracelet, $519.90

What is the one piece of jewelry that you never take off?

My obsession with the evil eye and hamsa hand go way back to summer holidays in Israel and Greece. My diamond evil eyes have so much become my signature that I am just launching my first ever Swiss-Made timepiece with the iconic design brilliantly sparkling on the dial. You can never wear too many talismans and I always suggest that the hamsa and evil eye should be worn together for maximum style and protection.

Buy Now, Champagne Diamond “Hamsa” Bangle Bracelet, $129.90
Buy Now, Blue Lapis and Sapphire “Evil Eye” Charm Bracelet, $224.90

What do you suggest we do to clean our jewelry in the summer?

My favorite summer secret is the jewelry bath. Gemstone and diamond jewelry gets dirty very quickly with sunscreens, soap and moisturizers. Mix the solution: 1 part ammonia, 1 part dishwashing liquid and 2 parts warm water. Bathe your jewelry (except woods, opaque gems and pearls) 10-15 minutes and use a soft tooth brush to gently wipe away the dirt. Rinse with cool water and pat dry with a soft cloth. Your jewelry will sparkle like new. For all other jewelry like coral, turquoise, wood and pearls, use a soft damn cloth to clean away the residues that are dulling the pieces.

Can we wear gold and silver together?

One of my favorite things to do is to mix and match my jewelry – old and new alike. I love to layer. I start with an antique piece or one that is black rhodium accented. I layer in yellow gold, rose gold and silver pieces to create a thoroughly modern look. Don’t be scared to experiment… I wear every color and texture of gold and silver as long as I have one estate or oxidized piece to pull it all together like this Diamond Rose Vermeil “Fleur De Lis” Ring.

I know you love to layer, any tips?

One of the things I’ve learned is to keep jewelry in PROPORTION. Choose one big piece and build from there. If you are wearing a chandelier or a long earring, choose a long necklace – 30 inches or more – to compliment the look and keep everything in proportion. Long and layered is a great way to get a big look while still wearing fine jewelry. Cuffs are my personal obsession, but when you wear them I would skip the rings and keep the focus on an important earring. With bead bracelets or bangles, the more the merrier. Stack them up half way to your elbow for drama and impact!

I lost my favorite earring at the beach, any suggestions?

Repurpose your jewelry — there is nothing worse than the single or ORPHAN EARRING lying at the bottom of your jewelry box. If you have lost an earring with sentimental or monetary value, take the other to your local, jewelry repair shop and have them turn your orphan earring into a pendant, charm or ring.

Buy Now, Diamond Vermeil “Peace/Snake” Pendant, $279.90
