Younger-Looking Skin: Summer Skin Prep and Maintenance

By Dr. Amy Wechsler

With summer fun can come skin damage from sun. To maximize your skin’s condition and avoid sun damage, here’s the plan. Start with my SkinAge test, then try treatments and products that make skin far more radiant than the sun. I guarantee you won’t miss that tan.

How Old Is Your Skin? The SkinAge Test
Take inventory of your looks—face them dead on. Only then can you effectively take action to turn back the clock on skin damage. After you’ve washed your face or gotten out of the shower, dry off, rub in some moisturizer, and look in the mirror as you take this test. Avoid pulling or tugging on your skin to influence your answers. Try not to cheat!

1. Is the skin of your cheeks (and maybe your forehead too) smooth or sagging?

  1. Smooth
  2. Somewhat sagging
  3. Sagging and forming jowls on my jawline

2. Do you have bags under your eyes?

  1. No
  2. Small ones
  3. Distinct bags

Product Picks to Save Your Skin from the Sun

Apply: Invisible Zinc

I discovered this amazing suncare line last year. Based in Australia, it is a brand that I recommend—and use—on a daily basis.

Consume: Berries and Green Tea

Fill up on antioxidants—all berries do the trick, and my favorite green tea is by Ito En.

Wear: Hats and Sunglasses

Covering up is fun with great hats and sunglasses. I scoop up hats from
Eugenia Kim and Albertus Swanepoel, and for sunglasses, I alternate between classic and dressier styles from Prada and Chrome Hearts.

Look Younger without Surgery

By Dr. Amy Wechsler

Most women are eager to improve the appearance of their skin, especially without surgery. I am just as eager to try, test, and study the latest in dermatological technology—and to bring the best of the best to my patients. The newest addition to our practice is Fraxel re:store, a revolutionary laser treatment that provides fantastic results like younger-looking skin—without surgery.

We have had a lot of inquiries about this laser skin-lightening treatment, as we were one of the first practices in Manhattan with this laser technology. So, I thought I would share with you how it works. The Fraxel re:store is outfitted with a dual hand piece.

On one side, the traditional Fraxel 1550 for laser skin tightening:

  • Improves texture
  • Reduces wrinkles and fine lines
  • Shrinks pore size
  • Tightens skin

The other side, a brand new 1927 to complete the look of younger looking skin:

  • Treats melasma—brown patches, often from pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Lightens brown spots caused by sun exposure

Fraxel laser skin treatment affects a fraction of tissue at a time with thousands of microscopic laser columns—each just one-tenth the diameter of a hair follicle. The laser columns stimulate a natural healing process that works from the inside out, replacing damaged tissue with younger, smoother, healthier looking skin. I have had great success with the combination of these lasers in undoing sun damage and the effects of aging for overall younger-looking skin.

If you are looking to regain a more youthful look on your face, neck, and hands, Fraxel re:store is certainly a great option to consider. The procedure is recommended for patients in their 30s and 40s, and I recommend one 10–15 minute treatment a month (at $1,500 an area), for a total of 5 times. Side effects may include redness, swelling, and numbness to the area for about an hour. To find a doctor near you, visit Fraxel re:store.
