Tell Melissa: Your Top 5 Beach Reads

It’s summer, and there’s a patch of sand somewhere with your name on it. So, we asked about your favorite beach reads. Before you grab your beach tote, buy one of these great beach reads to toss in.

1. Buy Fingersmith

I always go back to mysteries, and this is the best of all. It combines mystery and historic fiction and a huge twist. She is a wonderful writer, and the book transports you to another time, place, and experience.—Johanna, die-hard New Yorker

2. Buy My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands

It is absolutely hysterical, and I laughed out loud through the entire book! Read it with a cocktail!—Linsay, Clemson, NC

3. Buy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The first in a crime-fiction trio, I couldn’t put this dark mystery down. A mix of family intrigue, secrets hidden by time, and sexual tension, it’s the perfect page-turner.—Elizabeth, San Francisco, CA

4. Buy The Lucky One

I need a good ole’ love story once in a while. Some easy, “no-thinking” fun. Relaxing, feel-good, alone-time reading.—Lida, Laguna Hills, CA

5. Buy Atlas Shrugged

My favorite “beach” read, or any other. I’ve read it about every 5 years since college. Of course, I like mysteries and sci-fi as well.—Kathleen, Long Beach, CA

  1. Best book I ever read on the beach was Ann Fessler’s The Girls That Went Away.. not only a great read, but every woman in the US should understand the very important history of what our sisters went through. It’s a real eye opener while still being factual, gripping.. don’t forget the tissues!
