The Affordable Art Fair

A place for new and established collectors to buy art.

I’ve never purchased works of art before – it seems intimidating and expensive. Any suggestions for a first-time buyer?

Whether you’re a novice art buyer or an art enthusiast with a growing collection, The Affordable Art Fair is the perfect place to shop for contemporary art. More than 60 international galleries exhibit at the fair, featuring paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures, video and limited-edition prints starting at $100, with a maximum price tag of $10,000. (Here’s the silver lining for the current recession: Most pieces will be under $5,000.)

Think of it like the ideal middle ground between a street fair and a Sotheby’s auction…except that you’re invited to check out pieces from established and emerging artists with a cocktail in hand. The party atmosphere kicks off with complimentary drinks at a private preview on Wednesday, May 6th, and continues with the opening night reception on Thursday, May 7th. (The annual event lasts through May 10th sans cocktails and music.)

What makes this such a unique opportunity for first-time buyers is not only the diversity of artists that are exhibiting work, but also the numerous lectures, panel discussions, demonstrations, and gallery representatives on hand to help. (Our top pick: “Building Your Own Art Empire in a Recession.”) It’s also a great weekend activity for the family – especially on Mother’s Day when little ones will be paying homage to their moms through art. Art education workshops for kids ages 3-12 are provided by Claire’s Creative Adventures on Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 pm.
