Catching up with Wonder Woman Avis Richards

Avis Richards’ dedication to philanthropy is paramount. The Founder of Birds Nest Foundation, a non-profit organization that produces documentaries, short videos and PSA’s for a multitude of well deserving and under-represented charities, Avis Richards brings passion, zeal and energy to every project she takes on–raising much needed attention to lesser known charities and promoting awareness for their meaningful causes. This New York based mother of two has teamed up with New Yorkers and A-list celebrities to produce films for the charities of Goldie Hawn, Michael Bolton, Andre Agassi, John Legend and many others. I met Avis last summer and was so impressed by all of her talents and love of giving. The award-winning producer shares some of her interesting history, opinions and lifestyle secrets.

MM: What inspired you to start the Birds Nest Foundation?
AR: Seven years ago, I noticed a lack of quality media content for non-profits. Many of these non-profits spent large sums of money on production companies to get their word out. That’s money that could be going to a good cause, so I stepped in. It’s really all about giving back through media and giving non-profits a voice.

MM: I love the foundation’s appellation. Is there a special meaning behind it?
AR: Well, “Avis” means “bird” in Latin, so that was part of the name. But also, Birds Nest is always “hatching” new creative ideas, both beautiful and impactful once they leave the nest.

MM: As a crusader for Healthy Movement, a primary focus is improving and educating Americans about proper nutritional habits, especially for our youth; why is childhood nutrition so important to you?
AR: 12.5 million children are obese. Diabetes has increased nine-fold in the past 25 years. As a parent with two wonderful children, nutrition is especially important. I’ve gone to schools; I’ve seen what children eat. We need nutrition education for kids and adults, as this problem is a national concern.

Jill Martin: Her Style Tips and Fave Product Picks

TV personality and fashion expert Jill Martin is the go-to girl for all things style. She is a regular contributor for NBC’s Today Show and is known for her popular “Ambush Makeovers” and “Steals and Deals” segments, and sports interviews for the NY Knicks. She is also the NY correspondent for Access Hollywood landing all big celeb interviews. I love that Jill always shares her insights on the latest trends and how best to shop on a budget. She also offers great advice through her fashion self-help books, “Fashion for Dummies” and New York Times best seller “I Have Nothing to Wear.”  I caught up with the style maven to get some fashion and beauty tips, tricks and product picks!

MM: How do you best describe your look or style?
JM: Classic. I am most comfortable in jeans, a white t-shirt and ballet flats. The second I am done covering a red carpet, the heels come off and the Uggs go on!

MM: What are some recent purchases you are loving right now?
JM: My ALC Leather Dress (from 25Park.com), Alexander Wang long sleeve white t-shirt, fab turquoise earrings from Jennifer Miller Jewelry and hot pink Jimmy Choo sandals that I got at Bergdorf’s for 70% off!

MM: What is one timeless piece all women need in their wardrobe?
JM: A great pair of jeans!

MM: Who are some of your favorite designers in different price points and why?
JM: I love designers at all different price points: Dior, Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, Robert Rodriguez…and if you want a real deal, Zara has great pieces!

MM: What should every women splurge on?
JM: A great “schlep” bag!

MM: What are some things we can all do to de-clutter our closet?
JM: Go into your closet and take out your favorite things: blouse, jeans, sweater, slacks etc., and lay them on the bed. Then take out every other piece from your closet and if they don’t match up to the way you feel in your favorite items, then it’s time for them to go! I would rather you have 30 amazing pieces than 300 that are just “eh.”

MM: What are some tips for shopping smart?
JM: One-in, One-out (or for my mother, one-in, five-out). You shop smarter when you know you have to let something go.

Cool Color Trends to Wear into the Fall

These fives staples rocked the summer season and will continue to be huge into the fall. Here are our top tips for helping you transition these style splurges into the colder months!

Red – Red is going to be a huge color come autumn. Find a variety of reds in different shades and textures so you have the option to be bold, soft or glamorous. A great signature red item to invest in for the fall would be a pair of red shoes like the Lucia Suede Platform Wedge ($198) from Ann Taylor. The suede will be a fab fabric for colder weather and these shoes would pair well with a wrap dress.

Blue/Teal – Blues and teals are perfect for transitioning into September. Buy accessories in these cool tones to add the perfect finishing touch to your overall look. A set of bracelets like Chamak by Priya Kakkar Bangles ($58/4 at Nordstrom) helps lend a pop of color to your outfit while also displaying your trendsetting style.

Colorblocking – Colorblocking has been a big summer trend that will continue well into winter. You can wear this style in a two-tone pairing or in a multi-range of colors. To make the look just right for your office, stick to one color and pair it with a neutral. We love this 2 B Rych Colorblock Ponte Dress ($285 on neimanmarcus.com) because it combines nude accents with a burst of bold red!

Leopard – In the colder months, leopard looks sleek and chic! For this coming season, it’s all about bold outerwear that will get you noticed. A sophisticated and more demure style like the ASOS Leopard Coat ($155.15) can work its magic with an LBD or a pair of skinny jeans.

Orange/Rust – Orange and rust shades are the new brown for fall. Use these colors as great neutrals that add an autumn glow to your look. Choose a pretty satin shirt like this Patterson J. Kincaid Harlow Pocket Blouse ($98 on bergdorfgoodman.com). The burnt orange color will work well at the office when paired with a navy pencil skirt and can easily transition to a girls night out, too!

Have you tried any of these trends yet? Will you be wearing them into the fall season? Which one of these is your fave?

It’s Always on a Thursday

milly-h2o-blog-image-v2
As editors, our lives seem to revolve around going to fashion and beauty events, which all tend to occur on the same day—Thursday. For some reason, Thursday in the PR world is the best day to launch collections, view new products, and be seen. But this Thursday was unlike any other, since Lindsay and I attended product launches for 2 of our favorite brands. First, we went to the Milly by Michelle Smith handbag launch of Bergdorf Goodman. Later, we attended the H2O Plus cocktail event at its Madison Avenue store, where the brand launched new products from its Sea Pure line.

Upon arriving at the 5th floor at Bergdorf Goodman, we saw there was already a crowd. Socialites and fashionistas alike gathered around Michelle’s spring collection, which includes her new line of accessories. Aside from the designer herself, familiar faces included Linda Fargo, Eugenie Niven Goodman, Hayley Bloomingdale, and Blair Husain. It was a fun little soirée, with a trendy DJ, tasty finger food, Champagne, and a relaxed atmosphere, which served as a perfect complement to the new handbag collection.

As accessories fanatics, we are more than delighted about Michelle’s spring line of handbags and clothing. From bursts of color to straw to nautical looks, her line is guaranteed to have something for everyone. In fact, despite having completely different styles, Lindsay and I agree that we love the line. (Lindsay is more edgy and urban, while I’m more feminine and classic.) We tend to agree on one thing and one thing only: we like all things that sparkle.

Afterward, we made our way to the H2O event celebrating the launch of its Sea Pure collection, a line of skincare products awarded the Natural Products Association seal. In the beauty world, getting this sort of seal is comparable to winning an Oscar! The seal is given to personal care products that contain the highest level of natural ingredients. And this night, we had the pleasure of testing, feeling, slathering, and smelling a range of all-natural, brand-new products from H2O Plus. Our favorite was the Sea Pure Perfecting Eye Cream, a fast-absorbing cream made with sea flora, amino acids, and coconut and jojoba extracts, which acts like a burst of light against tired, dark-circled eyes. The best part: the eye cream leaves a gorgeous, pearlized sheen to skin, the perfect answer to a late night out. We were hooked.

Besides playing with the new lines of products and other amazing staples, we also indulged in a deliciously fresh and tasty blueberry vodka cocktail, in my favorite shade of turquoise blue. We couldn’t leave the store until tasting one—and then drinking it to the last drop. Yum!

All in all, both events were fun! We mingled, met great people, and saw many things we now want. Conclusions from the night? I am definitely buying myself a Milly bag to rock this summer, while Lindsay is definitely buying the H2O Perfecting Eye Cream. Until next Thursday . . .

Whether Lanvin or Target, Leopard Print Is Now…And Forever!

I love the leopard trend this fall. The latest collection of Lanvin bags–Devine! I recommend their Leopard-Print Happy Shoulder Bag for that 50s-inspired ladylike look. And while leopard print is hot this season, a leopard accessory is always chic. This Lanvin bag is truly a timeless investment piece. For a less expensive option (read: totally affordable), Target carries the Melie Bianco Leopard Clutch for $27.98.—Melissa Meyers, Founding Editor & CEO
