Rachel Roy: What Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe PLUS Travel, Style and Beauty Must-haves
Rachel Roy is a dynamic fashion designer whose pieces have been seen on every leading lady from Michelle Obama, Diane Sawyer, Jennifer Garner, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson. I met Rachel at a recent event and was blown away by her support of entrepreneurial women and charity. The gorgeous native Californian, whose personal beauty shines through every one of her designs has worked in the fashion industry since her teenage years as a sales girl– which she calls her early market research! Before designing her own line, she styled magazine shoots, music videos and was creative director for Rocawear. Since the launch of her Rachel Roy line in Spring 2005, Rachel has had a whirlwind of success including being inducted into the CFDA, appearing on Oprah, and launching RACHEL Rachel Roy, a diffusion line sold exclusively at Macy’s. Rachel shared with me what she has been up to lately and offered some of her best tips and products picks!
MM: You have a very interesting background. How has that influenced you as a designer?
RR: I’ve always loved fashion and taking risks in both what I wear and what I design as this has been a guiding principle for me. I’ve never let fear paralyze me but rather let my passion drive me. One of my goals is to help other women realize this as well.
MM: We are so excited about your new collection, what was your inspiration for FW 2012?
RR: My fall 2012 collection is inspired by the documentary Women in the Dirt which highlights the works of seven award- winning women who have made their mark in the field of landscape architecture and are changing our world. From this, the idea of modern landscape architecture and the influence of nature was really interesting to me– balancing the clean lines of landscapes and natural colors and interesting material combinations and details.
MM: What are 3 items you always have on hand during fashion week?
RR: Yoga mat- I practice yoga two to three times a week. The meditation helps me stay centered. Music- it’s one of the quickest routes to dream and always inspires me. Candles- the comforting and continuous glow of a Jo Malone candle while I work is a must.
MM: How do you unwind after such a whirlwind week?
RR: Take a breath, thank my staff and then off for some R & R. First I sleep and then I have a proper meal since I have been living off coffee and sugar for the past two weeks preparing for the show. I’ll spend some quality time with my daughters, visit the Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa at the Plaza Hotel for one of my favorite facial treatments, and lounge at home and watch re-runs of The Office or Modern Family. Then it’s right back into designing the next collection!

It doesn’t even seem worth it to mention how amazing Sofia Vergara looked at last night’s SAG Awards. It’s like saying the sky is blue. At this point we know she’s going to show up in a gorgeous dress with great hair and makeup.

Emily Blunt showed up wearing one of our favorite looks of the night. Not only did the neon green hue compliment her dark locks and creamy skin, but it’s one of the hot colors for this coming Spring.

Do you think Michelle Williams ever gets embarrassed showing up with best friend Busy Phillips? She often ends up on the Worst Dressed list, and this hideous ensemble is just one example of why.

Zoe had our jaws dropping for two reasons last night. She wowed in this white Givenchy number and she showed up with co-star Bradley Cooper, fueling rumors that the two are dating. Not sure what we want more: the dress or her date.

Worst: Kristen Wiig
This dress might actually have looked fantastic on Kristen Wiig, but there’s one accessory that just kept it from being a red-carpet winner. Can you guess which one? If you picked the giant dog collar necklace, then you are right. This large choker needs to go back to whatever S&M closet it escaped from.

Best: Rose Byrne
We know this isn’t a look everyone is going to go for, but just hear us out. If you want to rock a pantsuit, this is how it’s done. The sparkly Elie Saab outfit paired with Rose Byrne’s chic blunt cut makes for a fabulous 70s-inspired look reminiscent of Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. Bravo, Rose!

Emma Stone continued her red carpet style streak with this Alexander McQueen dress. The length and shape make the look fun and flirty, and her bright pink lipstick only adds to it.

Not only does Octavia Spencer keep winning, but she keeps working it on the red carpet. Her dress is so very age appropriate without being completely boring. The soft grey was a popular color at this awards show, and it looked great on her.

We’re not sure what The Game of Thrones’ star was thinking when she showed up in this dress, but we’re definitely not fans. The black and white combo can look sleek and simple when executed correctly, but when it’s not, it comes off as a bad 80s prom dress.

The Glee star really brought out the sexy with this Naeem Khan dress. It showed just enough skin without being too revealing, and the beaded detailing was absolute perfection.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Ashlee Simpson at a red carpet event, but she dazzled in a flapper-esque black dress. She even seemed demure covering her cleavage with sheer black tulle, while escorting her Boardwalk Empire actor boyfriend.

Viola Davis looked like a Grecian goddess in Marchesa last night. Her gold jewelry and eyeshadow only helped accentuate the embroidery of her dress without being too matchy.

Although she did slightly better at this awards show, she was certainly not Best Dressed material. The light blue dress was far too simple and didn’t do her figure any favors.

There seems to be a trend of funny women ending up on Worst Dressed lists. This particular gown was so wrong. The style and fit had such a dated feel to it, and her teal eyeshadow was overkill.

Sofia Vergara Launches Her New Clothing Line at Kmart
Sofia Vergara, star of the wildly popular show Modern Family, just launched a fabulously “modern” line of clothing for Kmart. I attended the launch event where Sofia presented the sexy budget-conscious clothing and told us why she created this line: “I always wanted to do something like this with a store like Kmart for normal women with normal budgets or small budgets. I wanted to create a line that was going to be good for anyone, any size, any ethnicity, any color, and very affordable…every woman wants to feel cute.”
Sofia says she was inspired by designers like Dolce and Gabbana and Donna Karan; think ruched tops in bright colors, leopard prints, cool pumps with a Brian Atwood-esque square toe box, slouchy bags…everything is very wearable and within budget! I was impressed by the quality and the details for the price point. Everything is between $16.99 – $59.99. If you’ve never bought clothing from Kmart, now would be the time to try it.
