As the warm weather winds down, the culture scene is heating up around the country. Our guide to the must-see movies, new music, must-read books, and hottest events you don’t want to miss.

Must See Films that We’ll Be Watching:
• Stone (opens October 8): Follow the action through the mind of up-for-parole arsonist and murderer Gerald “Stone” Creeson (played by Edward Norton) as he tries to persuade nearly-retired corrections officer Jack Mabry (Robert De Niro) that he should be released.
• Love and Other Drugs (opens November 24): Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway star in the film adaptation of the novel Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy. Think sales, game-playing men, and male enhancement drugs.
• Honorable Mention: Howl (in theaters now), Life As We Know It (opens October 8), Due Date (opens November 5), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (opens November 19)

New Music to Buy that We’ll Be Listening to:
• Maroon 5 Hands All Over (just released): The band’s sound has flowed from soft and acoustic to edgy with a back beat, but Adam Levine’s vocals prove to be just as sweet this time around.
• Brandon Flowers Flamingo (just released): Flowers’ first solo album mixes it up with the flavors of this native Las Vegas, his signature slightly off-kilter croon as The Killers frontman, and a messy grunge plus pop sound.
• Honorable Mention: Pete Yorn (out today), Kid Cudi (October 26 release), Taylor Swift (October 26 release)

Must See Art & Events We’ll be Visiting:
• Edible Garden, New York Botanical Gardens, in the Bronx, through October 17: Home gardeners and cooks can watch celebrity chefs like Mario Batali and Todd English concoct meals from ingredients found on site, ask questions, and learn techniques to use in their own gardens.
• Dalí: The Late Works, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, through January 2011: The first Dalí exhibit in over 40 years, see the surrealist painter’s most mind-bending works from the 1930s onward, including pieces not seen in the U.S. in over 50 years.
• Honorable Mention: Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties (Getty Center, Los Angeles, through November 14)

The Best Book Recommendations We’ll Be Reading:
Ape House by Sara Gruen (Spiegel & Grau, in stores now): Welcome sign-language-fluent bonobos, a retired porn star, explosives, reality television, and socially awkward scientists, all presented in the effortless writing style we loved in her previous best seller, Water For Elephants.
• Honorable Mention: The Food Matters Cookbook: Lose Weight and Heal the Planet with More than 500 Recipes by Mark Bittman (Simon & Schuster, in stores now), Our Kind of Traitor by John le Carré (Penguin Group USA, coming out October 12)
