The Skinny on Denim: 8 Pairs for Now and Later

Jeans are an absolute mainstay in everyone’s closet and they’re now constructed in virtually every way imaginable! From colored to striped and leopard to solid, we scoured the expansive denim market to bring you some of the best fits, looks and trends this season has to offer.

1. J Brand 899 Niko in Bright Royal, $255
No denim collection would be complete without a little J Brand love! Started in 2004 with a vision to create a jean with so perfect a fit it followed the contours of one’s body the brand became an overnight success after begin sold exclusively in LA at Ron Herman’s Melrose Jean Bar. The 899 Niko in bright royal is their new mid-rise skinny and we just love the racing stripe detail—perfect if you want to get in on the colorblock trend!

2. rag & bone Khaki Tuxedo Skinny, $198
One of our favorite pant looks is the tuxedo stripe (it gives the illusion of a thinner leg!). These jeans not only look amazing on but are extremely comfortable and made of cotton, tencel and spandex stretch twill. Über stylish rag & bone was founded in 2002 by Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, both of whom had no formal fashion training— sure fooled us! We are huge fans of the brand and these jeans will certainly make a great addition to your wardrobe!

3. Joe’s Jeans The Skinny in Fiery Red, $158
Joe’s Jeans “The Skinny” comes in 55 fabulous colors— so you can count on them having your favorite shade! Sitting just above the hips, The Skinny has a 12″ leg opening and boasts a 2% elastin concentration for comfort. The Fiery Red is bold and bright and a perfect color for all skin tones. Rock them during the day with your favorite striped flats and spring sweater or at night with a slinky top and pumps! Joe’s Jeans are celeb favorite, spotted on A-listers like Natalie Portman, Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie.

Real Housewife Kyle Richards: Lifestyle Secrets and Tips from Her New Book!

Reality TV personality Kyle Richards of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is a mother of four, wife, actor, philanthropist and now author! How does she do it all? I personally caught up with Kyle to find out some of her best-kept lifestyle secrets, tips on how to look camera-ready and her favorite things. As you may know from watching the show, Kyle always has a point of view and loves to share it. She is one of my favorite Housewives!

MM: What inspired you to write Life Is Not a Reality Show: Keeping It Real with the Housewife Who Does It All?
KR: I grew up in house of all women–my mom, grandmother and three sisters (I actually slept with my mom until I was 15 years old). I was always known as the dating guru–giving my friends and family tips on dating like how to get a guy to call you back. My real inspiration for writing the book is that I want to help women have the best marriage and relationships while looking and feeling their best. If I wanted to write a how-to manual to give to my daughters on having successful relationships, this would be it.

MM: What are three tips or take-aways from the book?
KR:
1. Beauty: I am a girls’ girl and love make-up. If I weren’t doing what I do now, I would be a make- up artist (I always like to do my own make-up). Using individual false lashes takes your make-up to a whole other level. In the book, I share my technique of how to put them on. My favorite brand for lashes is DuraLash.

2. Fashion: Mix and match your fashion with clothing at all price points. I think women should shop smart–if you buy the basics in solids from inexpensive stores, no one will know whether you are wearing Dolce & Gabbana or Zara. Stay away from prints in the less expensive stores. I recently wore leather leggings from H & M for $35.95 on the Wendy Williams show and received lots of compliments on them.

3. Relationships: I have a great marriage but it’s not by accident. It’s a big job and worth it to put in the effort. I enjoy giving people the tools on how to have a great relationship. For example, Mauricio and I have a designated date night. We also like to stay home more nights than out if possible. My daughters certainly have big shoes to fill.

MM: What advice can you give women who are trying to juggle a career and family?
KR: Make things in your life as convenient as possible. One of the things that is helpful for me is having my dog groomer come to my home which cuts down on time spent running around doing errands. I don’t have a chef, nanny or driver so I need to simplify my life and stay organized.

MM: You have the most gorgeous silky hair. What are some of your favorite hair products?
KR: For shampoo and conditioner I like Pantene, and for styling I use Moroccan hair oil to keep fly-aways in place.

MM: How would you describe your overall style?
KR: Relaxed glamour.

MM: Who are some of your favorite designers?
KR: For clothing: Haute Hippie, Parker and Chanel. For shoes: Fendi and YSL. Handbags: I am obsessed with them (and love to collect them). Favorite: Chanel.

MM: What is your “never leave home without” accessory?
KR: Lip Gloss.

MM: You always wear great jewelry. Who are some of your favorite jewelry designers?
KR: Jennifer Miller for costume jewelry. And Nicky Hilton too–I know she is my niece but she really has great things. Jacob & Co. and Loree Rodkin for fine jewelry.

MM: What’s in your make-up bag?
KR: L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, eye brow gel (any brand), Bare Escentuals lip gloss, Dermablend cover-up, The Balm Blush in Hot Mama and black Urban Decay eyeliner.

MM: How you do to stay in shape?  Favorite workout?
KR: It’s very hard for me to workout with my schedule. When I have time, I like to go on a hike in the canyons of Beverly Hills or Bel Air after school drop off.

MM: What are your favorite restaurants or nightlife hot spots?
KR: Of course Lisa Vanderpump’s restaurants SUR and Villa Blanca. Mr. Chow, La Scala, Il Pastaio, Shu in Bel Air for sushi. I like Frida in Beverly Hills for Mexican.

MM: Where do you and Mauricio like to go on vacation and where do you stay?
KR: I like to rent a house in Lake Tahoe with family and friends and get away from it all. Picnics on the boat, barbecuing, just hanging out with my family.

MM: What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
KR: Hand bags. I am having a hand bag shopping hangover this month. I hope Mauricio doesn’t read this!

Nicky Hilton: Her Latest Design Venture and More!

By Katrina Caspelich

Crazy busy hitting the fashion-designer high notes—bag designer, clothing designer, and now jewelry designer—Nicky Hilton recently sat down with us to discuss her latest venture, the Nicky Hilton Collection. This L.A.-based socialite-about-town and sister of Paris just launched her own designer jewelry line. Her fashion-forward necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings work with styles from edgy to classic. Nicky also reveals some of her must-have winter items, go-to fashion pieces, and favorite places to shop in NYC.

Katrina Caspelich: When did you discover your love for fashion?
Nicky Hilton: I was drawn to fashion at a very young age. I was always going through my mother’s closet, trying on her jewelry and shoes.

KC: When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?
NH: I did a lot of modeling as a teenager, and my favorite part of it was dressing up in all the beautiful clothes. It was always a dream to design my own collection.

KC: As a designer, what inspires you?
NH: I’m constantly inspired by other fashionable women. The glamorous style of Elizabeth Taylor was a huge influence for my jewelry collection.

KC: You were a handbag and clothing designer. Why jewelry?
NH: Jewelry is so much fun to design because it’s such an investment for a woman’s wardrobe. Clothing trends come and go so quickly, but jewelry is something you keep forever. It’s timeless.

KC: What is your favorite piece?
NH: I love the Bryant Park ring with the turquoise stone. It’s the perfect statement piece. I mix it with my fine jewelry and diamonds, and people always think it’s one of those super-expensive pieces!
Buy Nicky Hilton Bryant Park Ring, $198, at endless.com

KC: What is the price point of your jewelry line?
NH: Pieces range from $70 to $960.

KC: Who would you love to see in your jewelry?
NH: Women whose style I admire, like Gwen Stefani and Sarah Jessica Parker. They’re such risk takers on the red carpet, and they always have the coolest accessories.

KC: What type of person do you design for?
NH: When designing the collection, I kept in mind that I wanted to design for women of all different styles, so there’s something for everyone—edgy, classic, and contemporary.

KC: Who are your favorite designers?
NH: I love Balmain, Valentino, Marc Jacobs, and Prada.

KC: Who in the fashion industry inspires you?
NH: Diane von Furstenberg is very inspiring to me. She has been in the industry forever and

has gracefully maintained an incredible balance of family and work. Her brand has expanded so much over the last few years—fragrance, luggage, footwear, eyewear, swimwear, etc. She has really built a lifestyle brand.

KC: What is your favorite thing to wear?
NH: My daily uniform pretty much consists of skinny jeans, a leather jacket, ballet flats, and a couple of my jewelry pieces.

Buy Repetto BB Patent Ballet Flats, $310, at kirnazabete.com
Buy Nicky Hilton Soho Sterling Silver Bypass Spike Bangle with CZ, $250, at amazon.com

KC: Where do you like to shop?
NH: When I go to New York, I always make it a point to go to Bergdorf Goodman for lunch and some shopping. I’m also loving the new Isabel Marant boutique in Soho.

KC: What is your must-have fashion item this winter?
NH: Great booties! My favorites this season are from Tory Burch and Louis Vuitton.
Buy Tory Burch Cidnay Suede Platform Booties, $350, at shopbop.com

KC: What fashion item should we all own—and splurge on?
NH: A quality leather jacket. Rick Owens makes the best ones.
Buy Rick Owens Laced Leather Biker Jacket, $2,480, at net-a-porter.com

KC: What look makes you feel most confident?
NH: A short, sexy black dress. What girl doesn’t feel good in an LBD?
Buy Theory Mickie Fitted Knit Dress, $249, at saksfifthavenue.com

KC: Name your favorite vacation purchase.
NH: My Hermes Kelly bag that I bought in St. Barts. The bags are hard to find, so I was lucky when I came across a black leather one with silver hardware. I couldn’t pass it up!

KC: What 5 things can’t you live without?
NC: Water, my Blackberry, Rosebud lip salve, my boyfriend, and my kitties.
Buy Rosebud Perfume Co. Smith’s Rosebud Salve, $6, at sephora.com

Hats off to Fashion Week

By Jennifer Wright

One of my all time favorite movies is Ninotchka. Haven’t heard of it? Don’t worry – hardly anyone has. It’s a great movie to watch if you love hats, though. It was filmed in the early 1940’s, and tells the story of a hardened communist envoy named Ninotchka (excellently played by Greta Garbo) who visits Paris for the first time. She sees a cocktail hat in a shop window and declares that a civilization which allows women to wear such frivolous things cannot be far from collapse. Needless to say, by the end of the movie, Ninotchka is wearing that very hat, and . . . well, I won’t spoil it for you.

So I was thrilled when Pamella Roland announced that her fall collection was inspired by Ninotchka! Perhaps Paris and Nicky Hilton love the movie as much as I do. They were sitting in the center of the front row, right next to Nigel Barker. Amanda Bynes was in attendance as well as Kelly Pickler of American Idol fame.

The show’s backdrop was a screen of an imperial Russian palace, and some of the elegant, almost regal styles made me think of a novel by Tolstoy. The collection wasn’t all about hats, but it did have a heavy dose of old Hollywood glitz and glamour. Pamella noted that, to some extent, she opted to forgo the elegant evening gowns for which she’s best known in favor of coats. There was a link to her gowns though – many of the coats incorporated her delicate use of chiffon (another one of her trademarks) offset by a plentiful amount of fur. And certainly, the gowns she did show were fit for a Czarina. I particularly loved this one:

Tommy Hilfiger also had a fair share of hats, though I have to admit, I didn’t love his collection quite as much as Pamella Rolland’s. The models strode boldly about in capelets, complemented by very tall, rounded, wide brimmed hats. Forgive me, Tommy Hilfiger, but I couldn’t help thinking of the man in the yellow hat from Curious George.

I did love his gowns though! Though – panic – I think there might have been a moment where one of the models stumbled. She pulled herself together incredibly quickly though, and marched on confidently in her pale pink gown. Thank goodness we avoided another interminable round of Internet and television reruns of the poor young model slipping at last week’s Herve Leger show.

She might have had extra cause to be nervous – the show was meticulously organized and the amphi-theater seating was divided into perfect sections.  Beforehand, male models dressed in Tommy Hilfiger cardigans were serving china cups filled with hot chocolate and macaroons to the guests. Perhaps he did not want to be outdone by Betsey Johnson. Given his audience I’m sure he didn’t need to worry – Selma Blair was in attendance, as was Nina Garcia.

Ninotchka herself would have grown to love Fashion Week.

Betsey Johnson’s Show Is Better than Cupcakes

By Jennifer Wright

Remember that last column about how the economic crisis was taking a toll on Fashion Week? Well, seemingly not on everyone.

Maybe no one told Betsey Johnson about these dark times, because her show was too delicious for words. Little wonder as the theme was Betsey Johnson’s Sweet Shop. There was no sign of doom and gloom in this veritable candy land, in which the models channeled Queen Frostine in their perfectly puffed skirts. Well, perhaps Queen Frostine with a dash of 1980’s style punk rocker. Fatima of America’s Next Top Model fame did a great job.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-models

Betsey herself led the guests in a dance and encouraged people to try the table of sweets provided by Sprinkle Society. Meanwhile, a video projected onto the wall showed Betsey “baking” by wildly throwing pink glitter at a chicken. She also appears to be generously providing the boys of Patrick McMullan with day jobs, as they were all there, dressed up as waiters and doling out mini hot dogs and sliders. It’s not every day you are served a vegetable burger by Liam McMullan.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-food

I also want to say a special thank you to Betsey Johnson for the fantastic sunglasses in her goody bag. In my mind this was the most frivolous and fun show of the week.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-betsey-johnson

Peaches Geldof was in attendance, giving Betsey’s punk style a run for her money in short shorts and garters. She was also ended at the Alice + Olivia presentation later, where I joined Ask Melissa founder Melissa Meyers and her daughter, Rachel Meyers. Rachel and Peaches are shown posing together below.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-peaches

We quickly met up with the talented designer of Alice + Olivia, Stacey Bendet, there with her husband Eric Eisner and their adorable daughter Eloise. Stacey noted that the show this season was “all about characters, as shown by the puppets and the art.”

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-stacey

The models were in scarce supply. Stacey opted for artistic mannequins and fabulous pictures of the clothing instead, but the beautiful people abounded. Not only were Paris and Nicky Hilton in attendance, but so was 90210 star Shanae Grimes. Shanae was loving her specially made floral print dress by Alice + Olivia.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-shanae

While I was enjoying the mini-cupcakes by Baked by Melissa (it was a day full of cupcakes), Teen Vogue took a picture of Rachel’s Marc Jacobs outfit, but cannot feature it, as Rachel is not yet 13. Fortunately, we have no such rules here. Here’s a picture of both the fabulous Meyers women with Kim and Khloe Kardashian.

betsey-johnson-show-better-than-cupcakes-kim-melissa-khloe

The spirit of the shows may be different this season than in the past, but as long as Betsey Johnson and Stacey Bendet are around, the sense of playfulness that makes the week so delicious will not quite be lost.
